I was raised on a farm. Spent 8 years in military. Worked Civil Service for 12 years. Worked for Fortune 100 international company for 12 years. Now retired and farming again. I have worked in Germany, England, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and others. Have managed many nationalities or workers. We have multiple problems and are becoming a third world country in a hurry. Our grand children will not grow up in a leading nation, and may not even grow up in a democracy.

Lets take Japan. The workers are totally devoted to the company, work as hard as they can. Management is devoted to and respect the workers. Workers have life time employment with the company. Most promotions come from within. Management salary is limited to a specific number of times the lowest clerk pay. Quality is high. Products are packaged very carefully. Japanese shoppers will pay top price for top quality, putting quality first price second. They are not tight wads. Parents stress education. Schools stress discipline, study, behavior. Japan has one common language. Japan enforces its borders.

Lets take USA. Workers have no respect or devotion to company, goof off constantly. Management has no respect for workers. Workers are not guaranteed any employment period. Promotions are from outside. Managers get totally overpaid, and earn huge bonuses for trumped up short results, and sales VOLUMES - not quality. Products are thrown in sloppy packaging. USA shoppers are tight wads and will do anything to save a nickel, always consider price first, quality last. Parents stress kids feeling good, having fun, sports, with education last. Schools stress sports, dealing with second language speakers, and leaving on one behind. Schools have absolutely no discipline over the students, and parents will not allow their kid to be disciplined by anyone. USA has 2 common languages, which is enough alone to bring down the country. We will not enforce our borders or our laws.

In the same year that Lee Iococa headed up Crysler and govt had to bail them out, he was paid huge bonuses and earned MORE than the Japanese CEO of Sony, CEO of Toyota, CEO of Nissan, COMBINED.

And you wonder why we are falling into Third World Country status.

Tom, I think what you say is true. What we have here is a lack of unity and that seemed to start with the ME GENERATION. I've worked on construction sites where we culled the nonproductive workers because if the man next to you didn't pull his load you were pulling for two.
I don't know about the factory work enviorment. Apparently, the machine goes forward no matter what? Many people today take pride only in how much money they make, not what they produce.
These people do not understand that if they do not make their company successful,then the job they are doing will disappear along with their paycheck. How do you get a sense of selfworth if your work is sucking some corp. dry? National pride starts with the individual, that's my 2 cents.

I worked at chrysler in the late 70's. The people I worked with and for were nice people. Iaccocoa came into a situation where the previous exec terrorised his suborbinates to the point that they didn't tell him that sales had basically stopped. We kept producing cars until we were renting the State fairgrounds and part of city airport to store them. At some point reality set in..... BTW, there was a lot of bonus money riding on achieving sales targets.

Of course each and every person is responsible for their attitude toward this great land (USA) but in the "factory" workplace and in politics unfortunately a person is no more than a number in the "grand" scheme of things and it has been my observations that the workers/constituents will mimic the "top" of the food chain and in neither manufacturing nor in politics in this country (USA) that model has not been anything to write home about for a long time. Too much greed and attitude of "How can I get ahead in the easiest, fastest manner" without a thought for the next guy nor the next generation.
