Saved By Dirt

Did a little rub-a-dub-scrub this afternoon pulling away 25 years worth of Indiana dirt.

Darned engine paint is good to go; not even gonna mess with it. :>)

So, after seeing that, just had to see if I could do something with the rusted tinwork (3rd pic).

Nothin' to it Mother, I'll watch out over you. :>)

Got the shop heat on 65, let 'er warm up overnight and tomorrow, we're gonna see if we can make some diesel smoke.

SOS pads dipped in vinegar. Pulled the tarnish and rust right off there.

Little concerned about it staying that way tho, because I've had mixed results doing this in the past.

So, after I get it the way I want it and before I move it outside, gonna try sealing it with polyurethane.

Allan, i'd try wax. the old rub on rub off Simonize. Stay away from clear coats i think they would just give you trouble.

Well now Allan,

you oughta be able to darn near lift 'er up up by hand with hundreds of pounds of crud and mud gone!

Allan you gots to paint the air cleaner cover at least.(:~})

I thing you know what I meant when I said how surprised I was by the lack of rust on that 1066 now.

Allan, I'd agree w/ Nebraska cowman....I think that polyurethane sitting out in the Nebrask sun is going to give you big time grief in a couple of years.

Okay, advise taken.

Guess I'll go with the wax route then?

I've used this SOS method on chrome bumpers/grilles and know for sure that while it is a fast, easy clean, it's sure not gonna last because it will just rust up again and seems like it even speeds up the oxidation process.

Got to put something on it to keep the moisture/air off that metal. Never tried plain old wax before. We'll see how it works out.

Thanks,

Allan

"Paint" it???? We don't "paint" diamonds!!!
LOL!

That looks like staining from rust, from the air stack ? Seems once you clean and paint that, won't that stop the staining ? I've never seen any tin on a piece of equipment like that before, electroplated galvanized, like the old water buckets, trash cans etc., one durable finish to be only stained on the outside.

How'd it run? must have missed that part somewhere in the saga.

Allan, you could have strapped that engine in the back of my grain truck and driven both of them home! I"m sure there"s some more "stuff" here in IN we could have set you up with.

How come the "good stuff" is always so darned far away?

'Course come to think of it, everything from here is "far away". 20 miles to get the mail? What's wrong with that picture?

Oh well, I don't have a lot of riff-raff in the yard neither. :>)

Allan, consider the price if you went and bought a brand spankin' new combine compared to what you'll have in this one...or what it'd cost you to hire your combining done every year...surely you'll come out money ahead on fixing this? Right???

Not to mention the fact that it makes for interesting reading for the rest of us!!!

Well, yeah looking at it that way.

Trouble is, I didn't need anouther combine. Got one all set up for wheat sitting at the ready and chomping at the bit. :>)

Seems kinda rickety to me. Don't you want the oil to sit nice and level in the pan? Wouldn't want something getting starved of lubrication. Maybe it's just the neat-freak in me...
