Several weeks ago, I received an email from Harbor freight (NOT), requesting that I give them a review. They offered a really nice (too nice) tool set in return. So, I completed the review, and they then requested a shipping payment for the tool kit. So, I paid them about $45 I recall. They then rejected my eligibility for the tool set. I immediately turn "off" my credit card. They tried 3 times to collect the shipping fee.

Yesterday, I received a similar deal from Lowe's (NOT). Their gift is too nice for simply filling in a review form. Just wanted to make you aware of this scam.
First I've heard of something like that. Thanks for posting.

No offense but I don't see anywhere near enough details to be calling someone out on a public forum.
Dude no offense but he's got my money a I have no pump. He's dropped his phone. No way to get hold of him. He had to of had id to receive the money. Of course I will call him out.

David ..... surely you must see some of the questions that YT'ers are asking you so that your issues might be made clearer to the readers. You don't seem interested in answering any of them, which when I think of it might be a good idea. Getting into something like this deeper and deeper with all kinds of info and details might not be advisable. Hopefully you'll eventually get what you paid for and hopefully there is a valid reason for the delay.

I just wanted to warn some people. Had I known it would cause so much controversy I would of not said anything and accepted it an went on.
There is a forum in the miscellaneous section just for this, to report interaction one has had with sellers or buyers. It might not have got as many views with comments there. (And if by chance the pump shows you can ad and edit to report that.)

Here is a link to it.

Buyer/Seller Feedback

The problem with your warning, David, is you didn't give enough information for it to be useful to anyone. It's likely the name used by the scammer is a pseudonym or, worse yet, the name of a real person who had nothing to do with the scam. But if he tries his scam again, he'll almost certainly use the same modus operandi, since it's been proven to work. That's why folks are so interested in those details.

Got scammed by a man that went by the name of Brandon Davis. Alias " TJ ". I wanted a injector pump. 250 $ later. Absolutely no contact. Changed phone.so beware. I should of known better.
I had same issue several years ago when I advertised for PTO hydraulic pump on classifieds here. I trusted the guy as he responded to add here. I guess we live and learn and hopefully don't get bit too hard

David, I don’t want to “Dude” you.. but you have not even said what led you to the connection between you and the “scammer” I am sure it is plain as day to you, but you have not conveyed it to us? You mention he “saw the add” but you do not tell us where, was it in the YT classified? I know the deal upset you but you have to calm down and look at the questions asked and reply based on that. As Barnyard points out he can pick any name he wants, any hour of the day and any day of the week, so giving his name really does not provide any revenge on him. He may have used a 100 different aliases since then. The only way your post will have any value beyond you venting frustration is to say through what avenue the connection occurred. Then others can raise their level of “questioning the legitimacy” of others on the site you name. Another thing to remember and almost more scary is the impact this has on the other legitimate buyers and sellers on the platform that you are now going to avoid. This is true of web merchandising across the board. Kind of like staying out of a store that gets robbed a lot.
My mother lost about a $1000 to scammers before she decided that answering the calls to have a “nice” conversation with someone to help pass her day was not paying off to well.

You posted the wanted ad for the Simms pump on 12/28/2023.
How did you pay? By check via snail mail?
Where was it coming from?
Maine(?) to you in AZ is a long way.
With a holiday in there and any other minor delays to maybe remove it, clean it, confirm it is good to use as is, pack it good, get it to the depot, drop it off, etc.

It might take longer than the 13 days allowed.

If the pump shows up tomorrow or soon after, be sure to come back to this thread and tell us it showed up.

Thanks for posting this. I get these types of emails all of the time. I always ignore them but wondered how the scam worked. Some of the emails I get are probably legit but it’s not worth the time to respond. If I ever leave a review for a product I’ll go directly to the web site where it was purchased.

I'm in Az and he was California.its been two weeks. It's not showing up. He answered my ad on yt classified.said and uncle in texas told him about it knowing he had parts for a fordson major .seem knowledgeable about the pump. So I fell for it and wired the money gram thru Walmart and then nothing.. it was to cost 50$ to ship it so I just went an paid the 250$ he. Was to call back with tracking number but haven't heard anything. I believe I'm done here

I posted a "want ad" on Nex Tech - seems to serve mostly people in Western Kansas - don't know how it is so regional. I was looking for a belt driven hydraulic pump for a Farmhand accumulator. Got a reply from a guy - he seemed "honest" but was from Tennessee - how he had spotted my ad with my phone number I had no idea. He said he would ship the pump to me and quoted me a great price - all I could think was SCAM. Then he said he would ship it to me and after I inspected it, I could send him payment - he'd take my personal check. All I could think was "How could I lose". And it went exactly as I hoped. Pump showed up, looked good and I took a picture of my check and the addressed envelope and sent it to him in a text and told him it was on its way. About a week later he called me and said he got the check and was going to cash it - I thanked him again and called it a day.

That guy would have not only been out the pump but the $80 it cost to ship it to me. I might have done something similar as he did for about 1/10 the amount of the transaction like $30-$40 but not on $300-$400 - I just don't have that kind of trust with people I have never met and don't even know someone that knows them.

I can't even get honest answers from people when I ask them to describe something they are selling on facebook. A couple pictures of a pickup and they claim "We've been driving it". Then you drive 80 miles and you get there and it hasn't moved in years, battery is dead and no we don't want you to jump start it unless you buy it...

The wire transfer was a red flag, and that's why I asked you for the particulars. Scammers love wire transfers like Western Union and MoneyGram because it's nearly impossible to catch them or cancel the payment with these services. There's no need to use these services in 2024 (unless, of course, you're a Nigerian scammer). PayPal is a much safer alternative. (As Grandpa Love said, don't use PayPal's 'Friends and Family' option.)

That's all anyone was asking for. I'm not sure why it upset you so much or why it was so difficult to get this information out of you...

Anyway, you can at least take some solace in the fact that this person burnt a phone and an identity that took several hours of work and some amount of money to establish, for the sake of $250. He'll be lucky to come out of the deal with anything. Those burner phones aren't cheap and a pain in the arse to set up. They do that to discourage this kind of behavior.

The ones that'll do it for $20 are the ones that have me scratching my head.

David, thanks for the additional clarification I am sure others appreciated it. The Walmart money transfer is exactly what the scammers directed my mother to do in a couple instances. In other instances they had her do other stuff with gift cards that was way over the top unbelievable that she followed through with. In that instance they were threatening her with criminal charges if she did not pay what she owed on an Amazon account. She never had an Amazon account??
On another Ag/Machinery forum they have an announcement “frozen” at the top of their forum warning about scammers in their classified.
Other forum open that post at the top there are over 50 phone numbers and emails shown there associated to scammers.
There scammers have went so far as to hack or duplicate the posting members identity. Then proceed to scam others because other member feel that the other forum members are farmers like themselves and feel the others are honest as well, much like I think is the general feeling here.
JUST BEWARE YOU CANNOT BE TO CARFUL!!
