School me on final drive quills

Should the bearing races be able to move slightly? You remove shims to reduce play? I have read the Repair manual on my LA many times and am still not quite sure. I have all new bearings, seals, gaskets and want to get this right first try.

Bearing races shoulden't move - ever. That will just wear out the housing even more. Use Loctite sleeve - bearing retainer if it isn't tight. Yes on the shim removal unless they are thrust shims & end play is what you're checking. You add for that.

Alright so I was on track. So with new bearings in a final drive quill I would be able to take away some shims since they should have less play in them than an old set? I am working in an LA and the inside quill is the side with shims.

All tapered roller bearings, with the exception of wheel bearings, should be installed with a slight preload, usually .001 or .002. This is normally achieved with the shims behind the cups.

That's what the manual says as well and that's where I was getting confused. I think I am making it out to be a bigger thing than it is.
