This last weekend I was at my hunting property with three of my grandkids. Took em all for rides on the 8N and you should have seen the grins, including mine. Also introduced the two older kids to firearms, a little Cricket 22 single shot. The older one (ten year old girl) might just be a natural and the six year old boy was enthusiastic but needs some more work, but boy did Grandpa ever have a great time. The little one, a four year old girl, wanted to know why my house was so small, it's a 24 foot camper, Told her it was because her Grandma was cheap and wouldn't give me enough money for a proper house. Grandkids are wonderful.

Yeah Dunk, I know, I had them in front of me with my arms around them at all times, in first gear on level ground at half throttle with the pto off. I guess I could have tied them to me with a safety belt but I didn't. I wouldn't hurt one of them for all the tea in China.

I understand, I also know Murphy well.

My 9 year old had her first 4 wheeler wreck Sunday, she has the 4 wheeler for just over a year, and she had company Sunday, some more experienced riders than her, the 4 wheeler was rode more Sunday than in the whole past year put together.

(I say my kid caused I have raised her since she was born, she is biologically my Ole Lady's granddaughter, as far as I am concerned, she is as much my kid, as my 3 biological daughters)

She learned from the other kids, and got to being a daredevil.

She flipped it, thank goodness she only has some bruises.

She said Sunday, git rid of it, I don't want it anymore.

She was scared to death.

She just learned to ride a bicycle this month, and hasn't wrecked it yet.

That will happen.

I think she will reconsider the 4 wheeler.

With a lot more respect.

I am all for safety, and all for kids being interested in agriculture. i understand that things happen that are beyond control, and hate to see a kid get hurt, even the little boo boos. I rode the fender of my grandads old dexta for a zillion miles, and it was never a worry to him or anyone, and I gained a closeness to him that would be hard to get sitting on the fence. Also, i got a deep interest in farming and these little worn out tractors we all play with. Alot people complain that you cant get kids interested in anything thats not a video game or some other electronic, and that not enough young people are interested in our hobby, and I think its alot to do with the fact that they aren't allowed to get interested. My best memories as a kid are on a fender in 90+ heat all day with grandad. He was carefull, and if things got wild, I got off till it was over. from the time I was 6 or 7 on till I went to college I rode along and the worst that ever happened was I turned an ankle jumping off after the tractor was stopped. Sorry for offending anyone, and I believe each to his own, but my kids can ride along too.

I rode many miles on AC tractors as a young kid.

Many in Dad's lap, many on one of the little ones with him, that had a double sized bench seat, and many more on the fender of a larger one with large rocks bombing field rats as they ran out.

I rode many miles on the big Farmall with my neighbor that I called Uncle, although he wasn't any kin, on a tricycle one, all over all kinds of hills that I would be scared to even be on with a tractor.

The ACs usually had a disk on back.

The Farmall usually with cultivators, or a reciprocal mower.

The Uncle used to ride me on registered Jearsy Dairy Cattle.

High dollar cows.

I never saw a bush hog back then.

My greatest joy is taking my 4 yr old grandson for a ride on HIS 46 2N. This little guy is amazing. He is interested in Everything. We are working on an early 42 9N that he says is mine, and when we get it finished we will go riding together. It really tears him up that when there is work to be done with the 2N he can't ride along. His 10 yr old brother isn't interested in anything but video games and target shooting. at that he is really good. Both love to shoot . But that is where proper instruction and dilligence really come into practice. Murphy lurks everywhere.

I too, have fond memories of seat time with by Grandpa and my Dad. When I was real young, Grandpa used to sit me in his lap and let me drive. He used to stop the tractor and ease me off if the going got rough. When the "danger" passed, he would ease me back up and off we would go. Later when Grandpa's health began to deteriorate, my Dad would assume the bush hogging duties and I would ride along then too. I havent thought about it in years, but when Kilroy told about his experience with his grandad, it came rushing back. Thank you so much for helping me relive a very fond memory.
