Series IV - 3 pt problem

I own a D17 Series IV. I am having trouble with the hydraulic that runs my three point hitch. It will not go down when I push the lever to the down position. This lever is pressure up/gravity down. If I shut the tractor off - it goes down fine. When I turn the tractor on, even with the lever in the neutral or down position, it lifts and stays lifted. A year ago I had a pair of hydro ports added to run my fully hydraulic bucket. I now have three levers: Pressure up/down for the loader lift. Pressure up/down for the bucket tilt, and the pressure up/gravity down for the three point. The three point always worked fine - BEFORE the ports were added. This was the first time I tried to use the three point since the addition, and now I have trouble. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I had a problem like that with my WD. It was related to the traction booster control, it was a simple fix. Do you have a depth control. If so make sure it is not set all the way up. It is possible a valve but check the simple stuff first.

I had exactly the same problem as Mike with my Series IV. Loosening the bolt fixed all of the problems I was having with the 3pth.

Referring to your top photo. The stainless steel push rod moves freely. But the orange pivot arm never moves, no matter where the traction boost levers are. I will try to loosen the bolt you are talking about when I get a chance.
I don't understand the traction boost levers. I am assuming they are used to fine tune the depth, of whatever is attached to the three point. Why then, are there two levers instead of one? Normally my traction boost levers are both straight up, or about the middle of the range. Should I do anything different with them, when using or testing the three point? Thanks!

Jon - the two levers are for traction booster sensitivity (left lever) and position/depth control (right lever). They do NOT move the traction booster finger directly. What they do is change the geometry of the linkage underneath to change the settings. Both levers should be all the way forward unless you are using something like a moldboard plow where traction booster is needed.

If you can't get the finger to move, you've probably found the problem. Pry it forward to see if the shiny spool rod comes out farther. When it is pressed in, this hydraulic spool valve puts fluid in the lift cylinders...when it comes back it out they come back down. HTH. Mike

I loosened the bolt late yesterday and the three point is now working fine. I will be sure to keep both levers all the way forward. Thanks very much!
