setting up a plow

I need help setting up a White 3-16 semi mount auto reset plow to a 1750 or 1850 oliver. I know the plow is small for these tractors, but this is what we're working with. Where should the on land and furrow tires be set (distance from center of tractor. Or where should they be set in relation to the front bottom. I am doing this tonight. I really appreciate any help regarding this. I also posted this on the oliver forum.

A small plow pulled fast plows better.

In theory its nicest if the tractor tire spacing matches the plow so the center of the center of three bottoms is aligned with the tractor center so the pull is straight. I've not noticed a problem with the pull offset on my tractors especially with a semi mounted plow. In my ground 3x18 is plenty for my 4020 so 3x16 isn't much too small for your tractors.

You want the inside of the right rear tractor tire to be one plow bottom width (16" in your case) from the line of the landside of the right most bottom. So that bottom cuts its standard width. It will probably work cutting a bit more, it will load the tractor less cutting less.

Line of draft is usually 4" to the left of half the plows total cutting width. THat wants to be centered behind the tractor. So, 3X16 is 48, half that is 24. Add 4" makes for 28". Then add an inch or two clearance from sidewall to furrow wall....ie, you want inside of right sidewall to be 29" to 30" from centerline of tractor for that plow

Gerald: "Small plow pulled fast is better", now that is a crock of BS. Most of the plows discussed on this forum were engineered for 3-6 mph.

Your contention that the plow must be pulled fast is nothing more than an excuse for a poorly adjusted plow. Let me assure you, 80% of all plows operate, poorly adjusted. All I need do is visit a plow scrapyard, look at the wear pattern of plow wear parts.

Line of draft is not the center of the middle bottom. It is one-fourth the bottom width to the left of center of total cutting width. On a 16 inch bottom, that is 4 inches.

Gerald : I have no problem with 5.5 mph, you and I both know 9 mph is quite common amongst YTers.

I can also make them plow well at 3 mph, in fact I will place in top 3 at any plowing match. I plowed for years, 8" deep, pulling 5x16 semi-mount behind my 656D at 4mph. I also know the cost of plow wear parts per acre will be 20% less at 4mph than at 5.5 mph, You want economical plowing, load the tractor.

Hugh,

I continue to see your comments about properly adjusted plows, now where can I get info on adjusting them? The manuals don't tend to follow the equipment. My 311 is manual-less... fast hitch to boot! Being just shy of 40 years old my experience with these is basically non existent. So some better knowledge would be helpful to my inexperience. I have googled and made some phone calls to dealers etc. with no luck. ANY HELP would be appreciated.

Butch: Your off to a good start, at least you know the plow model number. Lots of folks don't

Go to a site called Binder Books, they have the rights to and are reprinting all IH manuals. In your case get the manual for the 311 plow, plus the proper fast hitch manual for for the hitch on your tractor. that hitch manual is quite important for a fast hitch plow.

When you get the manuals, come back with specific questions on items manuals are not clear on.

Hugh, now who is spreading a crock of BS about a 656D pulling 5-16s,8in deep,4MPH.You are at least 10,000 Lbs.light and 100 HP short. If you did add enough wt.to get your slipage under 5% then you are lucky to even run 1-1/2-2 MPH.As far as the 9mph,that is a new one to hear about.

333: Where have you been, I'm not the fellow advocating 9 mph, but someone different does it every week here on YT. Gerald wasn't one of them but those 9 mph idiots are on here with us.

What ever makes you think I can't pull 5x16 with my 656. I bought the plow to use behind 1066, but it just played with it, burnt 4 times as much fuel par acre. I wasn't about to waste time or fuel on that little plow with a 1066, it got sent out to do some real work for it's size. Before the semi-mount I plowed with a Farmall 300 pulling 3x16 and 560 pulling 4x16 trailer plows. My neighbor pulled 5x16 behind his Cockshutt 570. I'll grant you it was sandy loam and it plowed easy. Years ago we all used 2x12 plows behind a Super A in our area. I guess likely if a SA can pull 2x12, then 5x16 not out of line for a 656.

I'll say one thing, if you require the weight and horsepower your claiming, your doing one of three things. Poorly adjusted plow, plowing too fast or plowing deeper than bottoms are engineered to plow, maybe a combo of all three.

I wasn't speaking only for myself on those numbers. That is just a fact of life.Regardless of make or brand,4.5-5.mph,8 to 10 ins.deep.5-16-18=14,000-17.000 lbs.150+HP.6-16-18=19-24,000LBS.200++HP.A stock 1066 or 4430 has a hard time with 5-16s.Around us unless a 656-666 had a Turbo on it 3-16s was a heavy load.

Hugh, you are right I'am dreaming after reading from your other Canada fellow about pulling 6B with a 7710 Ford. The fellows that had 1066s and 1466s with enough hp back then to pull 6-16s or 18s would replace Rear Ends every year to year and half. Most went to Deere or 4-5B plows.Lastly I have seen the time with a 250HP 4 wheel drive with 6-18 Int.720 plow where you had to fall back to a 3MPH gear.I wouldn't bother you with my facts and will overlook your sand plowing anymore.
