Sharpening drill bits

I've seen numerous discussions on here over the years about sharpening drill bits and many of those discussions mention the Drill Dr. Usually in those discussions when the DD is mentioned there are also mentions of the more "quality" brand sharpeners like Darex, etc. Well, I learned something tonight that I didn't know that blows the thought of the 'name branded' Darex sharpeners out the window as compared to the Drill Doctor.......Drill Doctor is made by Darex.........Yep, the 'junk' sharpener that many talk down about as compared to a 'name brand' machine is actually a name brand machine itself, made my one of the most notable name brands in the arena of drill bit sharpening. Don't believe me, click on the link and see for yourself.

Very different machines.I saw some Lincoln 100 amp welders that were made in Poland. You cant compare them to the Lincoln 225 s welders..Or a Ford Ranger and an F350 diesel.

If you follow the directions, and understand them, the Drill doctor works pretty good, for the money. I sat down one winter's day, and sharpened 50-60 drill bits, of various sizes. The bigger bits are easier to sharpen, if you have one of those drill sharpeners, that sharpens on the end or side of a bench grinder. I kind of use that, as a pre-sharpener, and use the dd to make the final hone of the edge. On bits, less than 1/8", I just buy new, my eyes ain't that good, and the little bits flex, when they hit the wheel, anyway.

You're right. The drill doctor is made by a reputable manufacturer that has been building drill grinders for a long time.

It is a cheaper, less versatile machine that caters to the homeowner/hobbyist.

I looked at one, but rejected it because it can only sharpen 118 and 135 degree angles. I often need to grind 90 degree for spotting, and am looking for one that can do any angle and any relief.

I"ve been considering buying a Drill Doctor myself. I"m a machinist, but between my eyes getting older, and every fool in the plant coming in the shop and destroying the face on the grinding wheel, I think it"s time. I"ve read all of the reviews on Amazon.com and I think I"ll go with the top of the line DD750X. $129.99 right now. I"m going to spring for the left-hand chuck also. Best thing for grinding a left hand drill for backing out broken screws. Amazon has reviews from over 130 people who have bought this model. Jim.

When considering a drill sharpener being able to thin the web after sharpening the drill point is important also. This requires a sharp corner on the grinding wheel.
