Shift lever boot on D17

I feel a little stupid asking this because it seems like it should be such an easy thing, but how do you replace the rubber boot at the base of the shift lever on a Series 1 D17? I can't get the knob off of the shift lever and the boot is all torn to pieces. Do I just horse the new boot over the shifter knob?

Thanks for the help!

I just put a new boot on my D17. I'm guessing you're talking about the black rubber knob on the shift lever? There's no way you'll ever get the rubber boot over that knob. It has to come off. The metal lever has a knob on it that the black rubber knob snaps on to. You should be able to just twist and pull it off. No threads, just snap fit. If you can't get it off, you'll have to cut it. Where ever you got your boot should have the new knob too.
