Is there a minimum/maximum shim width for TO30 rear axles? My .003/.005 came off in pieces and I might have mixed up some from the parts tractor. Seems there was one or two .003/.005 per side that are junk, I have two .022 and a fist full of .015, Maybe .070 per side? Thanks in advance.

I just did this job. The purpose of the shims is to keep the but ends of the axels from hitting/touching each other inside diff. My tractor had WAY to many shims. I took out more than 1/16" to get down to the spec. shown in the shop man. Yes, many of my thinner shims were broken too. I have found that 60+ Y.O. tractors have had many cowboys working on them thru the years and not to trust anything you take apart and correctly assembled. Get a shop man. & read it. Again, JMO but Fergusons are not as simple as JD/IH, others. Harry was a genius... way ahead of his time. HFs are very technical for their time. If you are getting into tractor restoration, don't start w/ a Fergy. Get a green or red one first.

I am sorry but I disagree with your statement. I have never restored any tractor prior to tackling my TO 30. This is the only tractor I ever wanted to do as this is what I grew up on (7 to 15 yrs. of age). I would not think of restoring any other brand of tractor since they don't interest me. Oh yes, I do like to look at the other tractors at the shows just to see them but I have no idea if they are correct or not. I believe one should restore whatever brand interests them. Now my next project is a F 40. This is my opinion.

I just completed the replacement of both the inner and outer rear axle seals on my TO 30. Upon dissasembly I discovered someone ahead of me over the years had removed all the shims except one. Now that I have replaced all four seals on both axles I must have gotten the shaft bearing collar back close to the original specs which apparently was much tighter than someone ahead of me. This was probably why nearly all were removed in times past. When I attempted to torque down the last axle retainer assembly it is so tight that neither axle with turn. I have attempted to locate new or used shims but no site I have found offers them. I have read on the forum where people have taken them out for adjustment correction and I was wondering if someone had some extras. Thanks [email protected]

After checking this site and not finding any if you will go to http://www.external_link and then type in "ABC357" in the search box you will find what you are looking for.

I had to replace the seals and bearing on TO 20 a couple of months ago.
I ordered the seals and gaskets from YT. the gasket package came with ten (10) in it and said the extras could be used for shims if needed.
Love my fergie.

With both wheels off the ground, turn one wheel forward and other one should turn backward. If so, it's shimmed correctly. If other wheel does not turn, it's too loose (too many shims). If other wheel turns same way, it's too tight (not enough shims). Just make best guess and then do this test is my advice.

Thanks for the help. After our phone conversation I mangaged to do as you directed as it all made sense then. I have a set on order now. Thanks again for the help.

Thank you for the update. All we can do here is "try" to help each other, sometimes it actually works out. Glad to hear it.
