How about the pros and cons of SHINGLES SHOT anyone on here had any bad reactions or good . At 74 years the doctor thinks I should get one.

I got one a few years ago in my mid 60s after having seen my father go through the agony of shingles. No problems, but a research report that came out a few weeks ago suggested shingles shots aren't totally effective and may need to be repeated. I don't remember the details, but Google would fill in the blanks.

Got mine at 58. My arm was a little sore and itched for a couple days. It's no big deal. If you had chicken pox you need to get it. Might want to consider the Pneumococcal Pneumonia shot also. Got that one 3 years ago and haven't had a chest cold since.

From my Chair at 61,. School is still out concerning Shingles . My Dr.is among those that Says Shingle shots are ineffective.. You could actually make things worse. My 35 Yr old son got them this time last yr , He stillhas lasting effects , And Sadly He Researched and saw that as BAD as He was ,,. THERE are Far Worse miserable cases

My dad is 92, he got the shingles nnalert when he was around 89. He got the shingles earlier this year on his neck, top of his shoulder, and scalp. It turned out to be a fairly mild case with no major discomfort. I believe that the nnalert helped make it less severe. They really don't claim that the nnalert will totally prevent it. Not in all cases anyway.

If you have ever known anyone with a bad case of shingles, you will think the shot is well worth it.

Had shingles one time. NOTHING could be worse. I have also had the shot, now, would not hesitate.

Shingles shot doesn't say you will never get shingles but if you do get the shingles it will be a mild case.

David you can fool some folks but I know you .... AND you are way too sharp to have thought that.. LOL

Turned it down today I never had the chicken pox so feel I don't need the shot... I did take'em up on a tetanus shot tho...

I was supposed to get the nnalert last week and Doctor suggested to wait, there is supposed to be a new nnalert released in a few months that has a much higher success rate than the current one.

My brother had the shot he got shingles a year later, sister had the shot she's had shingles twice since the shot.I haven't gotten the shot and haven't gotten the shingles.

A few months ago, my wife thought we should get the shingles nnalert. After checking into it, they said we shouldn't get the nnalert until after 60 years old, quite a few years away from it.
The only reason we wanted to get the nnalert is that we have an ex-sister-in-law who got shingles and went blind in one eye and has less than 40% of her vision in her other eye. She was 55 when she got the shingles symptoms.

Got the shot a few years ago. Wife says there is a new and improved shot
either here or soon to come. Check your insurance as for paying.
If I got shot at Regular Dr visit , insurance would not pay, get shot at approved pharmacy and insurance would pay, crazy.

Doc told me the same thing...

Haven't had it yet. Have a friend who got shingles a few years back. Hit her really hard! Wife and I have been talking about getting it but didn't know anything about it. Thanks for bringing it up. Now I think we can make a well-enough informed decision.

I got a very mild case a few years ago. I was 48. Only had a couple spots smaller than a dime but damn it hurt. Felt like someone was sticking a needle I'm my gut. Doc wouldn't give me a shot cuz it wouldn't help after the fact. I should check into it again. I don't know how people could go through a bad case.

Same here... our insurance won't pay because they say we are TOO YOUNG (and I've heard it costs about $300 each). We're in our mid-50's.

BUT our daughter got a mild case in her 20's!!!

My sister got a mid-range case in her mid-50's and she was in a fair bit of pain for a good long while.

A good friend got shingles in her early 50's... docs gave her a shot right away and it did seem to lessen the severity of my friend's case.

Great aunt got shingles in her upper 70's... lived a few absolutely miserable years. Doc's even removed a small portion of her brain to try to kill the pain for her. It was awful!

An elderly guy in our neighborhood got shingles... probably in his 80's. His seems to come and go - and he has said at times he is just miserable.

Shingles is bad stuff for sure!!!

yes, I have had repeated relapse of shingles, it gets in my eye and has caused vision loss.
There is the new shingles shot, supposed to be much more effective than the old one. I don't know if it is easily available yet.
new shingles shot.

JM, get the shot ! About a year ago my doctor asked me if I wanted the shot and I hesitated. She told me that having the shot doesn't prevent you from getting shingles , but you will have a mild case of them. Well about May I lost my brother and had a stressful few weeks and then, I started getting pain under my arms in the lymph glands and somewhat on my chest. I figured I had pulled a muscle, then my back got itchy. Well I decided to look up the symptoms of shingles and I had enough symptoms that I went to the Dr. Sure enough I had them. Well I had a bit of a fever for a few days and a rash on my shoulder blade(left), the lymph gland pain subsided and within three weeks I didn't even notice them, by mid June the rash was gone and I would never know I had them. My father had tem,he had the worst rash and scars on the left side of his face and body, took almost a year to clear up and his were very painful and left him with scars and an eye that ached often. Because of the shot I had a very mild case which the Dr. says helped me build further immunity along with the shot and now the chances of ever getting shingles again is statistically zero. What many people do not realize is the severity that can occur and even death from severe shingles. I am sure glad I got the shot

Last med exam I had the doc said I was old enough to have a Shingles shot if I wanted. Actually all he got out of his mouth was old enough for a shingles.... At that point I said YES. Know way to many people older than I who have had suffered shingles to even think twice about it.

[i:0ee1ddfb63]Two vaccines may help prevent shingles — the chickenpox (varicella) nnalert and the shingles (varicella-zoster) nnalert.
Chickenpox nnalert

The varicella nnalert (Varivax) has become a routine childhood immunization to prevent chickenpox. The nnalert is also recommended for adults who've never had chickenpox. Though the nnalert doesn't guarantee you won't get chickenpox or shingles, it can reduce your chances of complications and reduce the severity of the disease.
Shingles nnalert

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of the varicella-zoster nnalert (Zostavax) for adults age 50 and older, whether they've already had shingles or not. Although the nnalert is approved for people age 50 and older, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention isn't recommending it until you reach age 60 or older, when the risk of shingles and its complications is highest.

Your doctor may recommend vaccination between ages 50 and 59 if you have a condition or circumstance that may make it more difficult to tolerate a shingles infection, such as chronic pain or if you have received or expect to receive certain medications that suppress the immune system.

As with the chickenpox nnalert, the shingles nnalert doesn't guarantee you won't get shingles. But this nnalert will likely reduce the course and severity of the disease and reduce your risk of postherpetic neuralgia within the first five years after vaccination. Protection beyond five years is uncertain.

The shingles nnalert is used only as a prevention strategy. It's not intended to treat people who currently have the disease. The nnalert contains live virus and should not be given to people who are pregnant or have weakened immune systems.[/i:0ee1ddfb63]

That's strange that doctor would say not till your over 60 years old. I have known 3 person in their 40s and 50s that got shingles and they got them bad. After they got them settled down they got shot and shot will make any future bouts with shingles will be mild. If you are on medicare part D will pay for shot.

Neighbor lady got shingles in her early 70's. Dr gave several meds to help with the pain and other symptoms. After about 2 weeks she still was not getting any relief. Her son told her to take L-lysine twice a day and to take 3 each night and morning. Within 2 or 3 days she was starting to get relief. Don't know if just lucky or not but if someone gets the shingles it may be worth a try.

I'm like you trying to decide whether to get it or not.I didn't realize it was a live virus shot that throws a whole different light on the matter as far as I'm concerned. Also
if there is no reaction from a live virus shot it probably didn't do any good.

Dixie just had them or is in the process of having the shingles. The weekend she broke out we had planed on getting the flu shot and shingle shot. We went Saturday to get the flu shots and was told they were not giving the shingle shots at this time. They had the serum called back and have not received the new yet. they said the old was only 60% effective and the new serum would be 90% effective in keeping you from getting shingles. Dixie will have to wait a full year because she has them and I can get the new shot in a month or so.

Don't know about shingles but got the the chicken pox when I was 30. It was spring and the doctor said I cant go to work and say cool and out of the sun, well I was planting corn and got so sick I could not hardly walk. So I am getting a shingle shot as soon as they will let me..only 42.

got my shingles and flue shots yesterday at my V.A. annual check up. I haven't had any side effects as of yet from either.

Me too. I get a lot of good and bad reviews of medical issues from ordinary people who have experienced them on tractor forums. TDF

Lysine helped me with relief when I got shingles. The pain was so bad I couldn't focus on work and had to go home and be miserable.

The 60% effective is what I don't understand that to me means 40 out of 100 people that get the shot will still get Shingles. But I also have read that in the general population
one out of 3 people will get Shingles in their lifetime. That is 33 people getting Shingles out of 100.If both are true statements then a person is more likely to get Shingles that gets the shot. Also with a live virus if you didn't carry the virus originally once you take a live virus you'll have it after that in your system.

Get the shot. The upside is much stronger than the downside. seven years ago this coming Christmas my dad who was 86 got shingles bad. It was the beginning if a downward spiral for him that now has him in a wheelchair in the nursing home. When he got shingles I was 59 going on 60 that coming February after he came down with it. At that time they wouldn't give the shot to any healthy person under 60. He kept telling me I WILL get the shingles shot when I turn 60 and I followed his orders. Marilyn had had shingles twice. First time was during finals her senior year in college. Second time was a couple years after we were married. She was young and strong then and got over it in short order. She too has had the shot now that she is older.

I am a strong advocate for vaccinations. My mom got polio when I was six months old. She was crippled for life. She could walk but needed an arm crutch at all times. I grew up assisting a crippled parent, walking alongside her offering a strong arm for her. We all know what vaccination did to polio. We don't hear of polio anymore here in the US but it is still present in countries that don't have a strong vaccination program. Sorry I strayed a little from the shingles topic.

jm,
I went to the doc last week, gave me a scrip for the Prevnar (pneumo- whatever), TDAP (tetanus WITH pertussis, very important that it includes Pertussis protection for whooping cough, especially if you are or are likely to be around babies) and Shingles. Pharmacist where I got the shots gave me the Prevnar and TDAP but like RCP in his post, she said to wait for the new shingles. She'll call when it comes in and no idea when that is. I was hoping for days or weeks, not MONTHS.

Pharmacist gave the 2 shots in different arms and said they're likely to be sore for a few days and would probably have some mild side effects. Nothing happened, arms were only sore if I bumped them on something. Heck, at 67 I've got more soreness just getting out of bed in the AM. Oh, also got my flu shot last week.

My shingles were shot after 30 years, which is pretty good for asphalt. I replaced the shingles with metal and it will outlast me.

Get it and I hear there is a new one out so get that one. I had it and have friends who didn't. One guy has had it for over 3 years and it bothers him every day. Has a piece of scotch transparent tape holding the skin above his left eye up so he can see out of that eye. They say it only affects your torso with an itchy rash but he had that and the eye thing. When I find out about the availability of the new shot will get it.

your vision can be impaired by shingles if it is in the face. I know a lady who lost a little vision in one eye from shingles.

You are crazy if you don't get one. What others have posted applies. Have you ever layed down a motorcycle? Remember what road rash felt like? People have told me it gets worse! Your body wants to heal but the virus wants to rip you up for awhile. Also get both pneumonia shots!

Decades ago I would get sick every January-February. Horrible fever, constant vomiting, etc. Nobody in my family ever had a flu shot so why should I? Scared my wife bad a couple times...it was that bad. At some point someone told me I should get a flu shot. I was at a point I was getting germophobic I was so scared of flu. So I tried the shot. NO flu that winter for me. I have had a flu shot every year now for most of 30 years and have never had a repeat of my annual illness. Doctor joked this year that I was probably immune to all strains after so many years but I just told him to give me the shot. It was gonna kill me eventually. I had a great-uncle and a grandfather die the same day in the great flu epidemic back around 1917-18. They were both in their early 20's. SOOOO....to make a short story long...I would get the shingles nnalert ASAP. I too was told I had to cross 60 to get it, so I am waiting. But the day will come and I will get it.

Wife may have been due for a blast of shingles , she was swollen for days after her shot. Could barely find my injection site the next day. Could be because I had one chickenpox blister at age nine , then caught a full dose of chicken pox at age 32. Three days of a 104F fever, sweats and chills.

I used ban antiperspirant roll-on on any newly formed or ready to pop blisters when I had my bout w/shingles.
Took away a good amount of pain, dried up the blisters.
I've also used ban roll-on for bug bites. Helps here too.

Heard on the radio that there were less than 20 cases world wide.
Actually it was less than that but I can't remenber
The number.

I generally like my part D but I got around a $250.00 copay if I want the shingles shot.

TM 1 I called today and was told by my drug store that they would not have the new shot for about two more weeks but were advising callers not to take the old series so I am in a waiting time now, sure got a lot of responses to this question. I had pretty much made up my mind to get it now I am for sure getting it after all the positive replies.

In this case your doctor is very wise. Get the shot. My wife has had shingles and they reoccur often. Highly unusual, her doctor tells us. Very painful and debilitating. I got the shot several years ago with no side effects. It's the least you can do for both you and your family.

I got the shot about a year ago, no side effects. However, the original version of the shot gradually loses effectiveness. Studies have shown it to have lost about 80% of its effect in 8 years. The new shot is supposed to be ok for those who had the original shot. I will probably go back and get the new version of the shot, which is more effective in the first place, and is thought to maintain its effectiveness over time.
