Sickle Hand Rivet Tool

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement punch for the JD sickle mower rivet removal tool? The pin on mine broke yesterday and I am having a hard time finding one. My two local machine shops both would charge me for an hours work to make me a new one. Or in other words, they didn't want the job. Thanks in advance!

Ha!! The girl with tattoos and a cell phone glued to her hand couldn't tell me when I was there last week if my parts were in even though they were in a bag with my name on it in front of her. Forget knowing what corn head grease was. Any chance this was ever in a part catalog?

Kidding aside - I use an adjustable stand (something like they use with a table saw) to hold the other end.

I was actually using a large table saw as my table because I could clamp the bar down well while I banged them out. I just got the tool and was shocked to have it break so quickly...

I am down right next to Cape Cod in Plymouth. I used to cover that area for work. It is quite nice up that way.

Several years ago I replaced all the sections on the knife of our JD 39N mower.

Used a grinder to remove the rivet heads and a small punch to finish.

I am going to move to my in-laws in Texas James so I can be closer to your projects and help! I am looking to do the same for my No.5 as you did with your 39N. I was given enough new JD NOS serrated knives to replace all on my 6 foot bar. I know the hammer and punch will work, but I'll just be darned if I have this tool I can't use. I have actually found a punch that will fit, but probably not an exact replacement. It is coming from CentralAg and Rubber. They are a wholesale dealer from NE. They sold me just one punch because I told them how much trouble I was having finding anything close. They sell to ag suppliers in the NE area and have the same exact tool for sale new (as far as I could tell) and also parts! I should have the piece in a few days and I will post back and let everyone know how it goes.

What you are describing sounds like a Part # TY3768 rivet tool. If so, the John Deere part # for the punch is TY5012. If you take these #'s to a dealer, they should be able to pull up a picture for you. If you can access JD Parts, you can do a "where used " search, or you can find it in the parts catalog for a 230 cutting platform.
Not all of us parts people have tatoos and cell phones..*grin*

TY5012 is a 5/16" punch. TY5006 is a 1/4" punch, but shows "NLA"... HMMMM????.

I spent a good hour trying to figure out what that tool would be under in JDparts the other day. Searched it under several mowers to see if it would be in their parts manuals, etc... Glad to see at least the 5/16" is still available. Next time I put in a parts order I am going to grab a few. Thanks!

I wasn't implying all parts people are that way, but the one at the dealer here has really soured me. No clue about equipment, rude, and could care less about much else besides herself. Must be the owners daughter because if I was in charge she would be long gone. Lots of other guys have quit going there for parts as well.

Like mentioned by several, if you set the bar with sections facing down on a piece of steel with a sharp 90 degree edge, (heavy angle steel might even work.. we had a heavy piece that had a sharp 90 degree edge) and hit the flat top of the knife with a hammer, the rivets will usually slice off. That doesn't always work, but it did the vast majority of the time for us. If that works, punching the rest of the rivet out is easy. We then used an anvil to flatten the new rivets.
That was the old Yankee way...for what it is worth!

Thanks again for the part numbers. I was looking at old mowers, No.5 No.8, never once thought to look at the 1209 or anything "newer" vintage.

Mine is not a John Deere, but I just bought one for mine today at a MF/New Holland dealer. It was a TISCO product. $4.25

I use a sickle repair block made by the Albert Lea Foundry to shear the knife rivets.John Deere sold one years ago.I see TSC is selling cast iron knife guards from china.One in the bin was broken.I put new knives on my guards.
