Silly Question I am sure

I am rebuilding a sickle mower & saw on the sickleservice website a listing for wear plate.
some 6" long & some several feet long. My Silly Question is what is a wear plate on a sickle mower?

Under the sickel where the back side slides against the bar there is sometimes a angle strip that lays between the sickel and the bar, most all bar mowers had them until the newer stile guards

wear plates are used to keep sections in straight alignment. The wear plates rub against the back of the sections. They are available at most tractor parts stores, and they are flat pieces of metal fixed to bar. You don't want the sickle bar to move sideways at an angle. When they get worn you can often flip them over.

Never seen one you could flip over, they have two ware edges, one on top and a second on the front edge and if either gets worn then you will have cutting problems

my "old" Ford 515 mower originally used flat wear plates, no curved lip, that you could flip and use other side when they got worn. I agree, seems newer "universal" wear plates you can't do this.

That 515 mower is new for me, mine are all older and on McCormic, John Deere, Oliver, Moline, Ford, David Bradley, all mowers I have had and combines Deere, AC, and Massey Harris all had that lip. that controls the forward back movement of the knife and without that there is nothing to keep the knife back from chewing everything else up.
