simms injector pump rebuild/replace

Looking at a Super Dexta 3 cyl. diesel. The owner says the fuel injector pump is bad. I looked around on the internet and this looks very expensive. It is a Simms minimec pump. Is it possible to rebuild or replace this pump for $500.00 or less? Any links to more information would be great.
Thanks, Terry

Terry, just a shot in the dark here, BUT. Before you try replacing that pump, check to see if the lubricating oil has been changed regularily, or if the previous owner neglected to even check this area. Many folks forget or are not even aware that that lubricating oil is VERY IMPORTANT in those pumps. In order to check this do the following. On the very top of the pump is the fill hole (15/16th wrench). On the side is the level plug (1/2" wrench) and on the bottom of the pump is the drain plug (again 1/2" wrench). Probably best to drain first (to see if it even has oil) then fill to the level plug with fresh oil (same oil you would use in the engine and air cleaner). VERY IMPORTANT, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THESE PLUGS as the housing is aluminium and threads are VERY EASILY STRIPPED.It sure wouldn't hurt to try this procedure first. BTW, those Supers are one heck of a tractor (bought mine new in 1963 and still use it every day). Hope this helps - Jim

Thanks for the reply. I will be sure to check the oil first thing if I buy the tractor. I just want to get an idea about the price if things are really bad. I have not yet decided how much I am willing to spend on the tractor, it needs some other work as well as the pump.

Just wonderin' what other work it needs ? Up here (Ontario) they would bring around $3-4500. in good shape. Try the Fordson site here and do a search for Super Dextas there. There is a lot of support in Europe for Fordsons.

He tells me it needs a starter, this is going to cost between $150.00 and $200.00 dollars. I don't know if the fuel injectors are good or not. I also don't know about the rings, valves, etc. I am trying to get a rough idea of what it will cost to get the tractor into good running shape. The tractor will not start.

terry274,
yeah you should be able to get a rebuild for around $500. There's a couple of places online, but I took my 4 cyl Simms pump to a local shop. As I recall, it was about $450 for the basic overhaul but I spent another few hundred ($300?) because the driveshaft was bent. 3cyl should be a little cheaper.

As for the starter, if you buy the tractor, I'd clean all the contacts real good first (remove cables, clean all connnection points and cable ends nice and shiny). Many times a poor connection is all that's keeping it from starting.Check on a rebuild for that as well. Could be cheaper.

Hi Jim.

Just a quick question about my injector pump. I have a Ford 3000 Diesel and I replaced the Lift pump and upon replacing the oil in the pump, the oil started overflowing out the rear of the pump. It appears to me that I"m missing a bolt or is this the fill line plug? There is also a "breather" on the outside of the pump on a cover plate that appears to be a bleed screw or something. Is this the overflow and I need a bolt for the rear? The bolt in the rear in right next to the camshaft cover"s upper bolt. Thanks for any help

Matt
