Small lever

There is a small lever on the right side under the seat of my newly purchased 1949 8N. What is this lever for?

I've heard three explanations.

It's the control lever for the ejection seat.

It's a flush lever.

It's the draft control lever.

I'll go w/ the draft control lever.

Check out tip # 39. These manuals will be a great source of information.

The only time the draft control lever needs to be down (in draft mode) is when you are plowing. If the plow hits hard dirt, the tractor slows, the draft spring (the big one behind the seat) engages which in turn causes the internal linkage to raise the plow.....and the tractor keeps moving. Pretty slick technology for 1939.

In the up position, the internal linkage controls the position of the lift arms. If you set the touch control lever w/ the lift arms half way up, that is where they will stay. Not so w/ the 9&2N’s, which did not have position control. The only way to get position control on a 9&2N is to add an external jig sold by one of the regulars here, Zane Sherman.

Its the ejection seat activation lever. (LOL)

Its the lift mode selector. Down is for plowing, up for position control.

the 9N and 2Ns didnt have it.

Does anyone use draft control when using the rear blade? MIght try it next time I use the blade.

Geiger......I've used draft control on a "York" rake spreading chipped parking lot gravel. I used "amplified" in the middle hole vs the lower hole that you MUST use when plowing. Yes, it did the uppsies-n-downsies and left the driveway "wavy". Naturally, un-acceptable but was interesting. Re-spread using position control. I suspect it kinda depends upon what yer moving.......Dell

That is what I suspected it would do. I was thinking about snow mainly, but seldon get enough to try it out and when we do the MC i got works better in snow.

Yep. Draft control is nice when grading dirt with my 9N.
If i get too big a pile of dirt built up in front of my rear blade the blade lifts and i keep going. Is nice. (of course i only have draft control but still is nice...)

I am working out issues with the hydraulic on my 8n, wasn't working when I bought it and upon inpsection so far the oil was low and had water in it. currently have the tank off so I can start it for now but the verticle rod that moves the controls work when the little lever is down or forward but when I put the little lever in the up position and try to operate the control lever the verticle rod does not activate the pistons?
