Small log debarker

I buy cants from the local sawmill and I resaw them for pallet lumber. What I am looking for is a small hand held tool To clean up Where there is a small amount of bark left. Maybe something that would go on a 4 in. grider? Anyone ever seen such a critter? With the laws brought on because of the ash borer, I cannot ship any lumber with bark on it.

Go to baileys.com and search log wizard. It's a planer that bolts to a chainsaw bar. Uses the chain to drive the planer. The chainsaw wheel gizmo that goes on a 4' grinder works pretty good, too.

I use a Logging Bark Spud Peeler with a long handle, makes short work of bark left on lumber/logs an old time tool that had many uses besides peeling like making hole for ice fishing etc.

a garage floor scraper can be changed to do it. Looks like a garden hoe that has been changed to 180 degrees instead of 90 degrees. Change the angle on either tool to 165 deg. The floor scraper is built much heavier than a hoe. It gets right under the bark & pops it off the wood.

If something like this would do it for you, I have one you can have... Just shoot me an email with your address and I'll get it in the mail... You'll have to sharpen/dress it up a little but it's in good shape.....

Thanks guys for all sugestions. What I"m using now is just a plain old hatchet. Had not considered a draw knife. Gonna try that and see how it goes. And I just happen to have one. Thanks, Jody

The traditional tool for this purpose is a "bark spud". It is a long handled tool with a heavy duty curved scraper at the end.

I am enclosing a link to Traditional Woodworker's bark spuds. I got hits on Amazon too.

What about one of the chainsaw debarker attachments?
Maybe run an electric chainsaw to keep your costs down?
Cut and past of an internet ad below
Turn your chain saw into a debarker, notcher, or planer!! Easily mounts on any saw bar. Uses .325 or 3/8" pitch chain to drive the drum that has two 3 1/4" planer blades. Use to debark and notch logs. You can make notches or debark poles for barns, fences, bridges, landscaping, log home construction and more!! Save time and money, the uses for this great tool are endless. Features all ball-bearing construction for long life and durablitlity. Comes with universal spline/sprocket system, which accomadates all pitches of saw chain and two blades.

They make a wood carving tool that looks like a chainsaw chain wrapped around a 4" grinder disc. I don't think you'd want to use that in a hurry though, likely to bite you some day.

When I worked for the sawmill they weren't allowed to ship out certain species of lumber (for instance Ash) with wane/bark on it, so they would use a simple draw knife to clean the lumber up. Not fast but gets the job done.
