Smith 100 Portable Air Compressor

I am looking at purchasing a used Smith 100 Portable Air Compressor. I am not knowledgeable about the V-8 unit and how it actually produces compressed air. I have only looked at the pictures. One of the engine heads looks normal with plug wire/spark plugs. The other engine head is covered up with the component that compresses the air. Any comments are appreciated.

Which is perhaps the "aftercooler" that cools the air before it goes to the tank.

The ones I had/used ran FORD engines,ran on 4 cly.,pumped on 4.I used to see a lot of SMITHS as rentals.
Easy to work on.I always thought hard on gas.

I worked on them in a rental yard as mentioned . The engine was a 302 I believe , could have been a 351. The compressor side has a special head with large check valves for intake and exhaust , which goes to the air tank, stove bolt simple ! They were very reliable , mostly common Ford parts. We needed a starter for one , Smith dealer wanted $500,Took it to a rebuilder who took the nose off that starter and switched it onto a Ford car starter, $50 ...good to know, mounting holes were the only thing different !!!

i too have a smith 100d. my workers knocked a sensor on the edge of the pressure tube. i think it was to control the rpm thruster. do you have schematics on this machine, and are these common replacement parts?

You *probably* won't have much luck finding info online. Gordon Smith's compressor division changed hands a few years ago. A customer brought one in for service recently and he had an original manual.

The manual was in "well-used" shape, but was complete. I scanned it into my desktop at work so if anyone needs a copy let me know. I'll grab it tomorrow if I remember, and upload it to a media-hosting site.

I'm having a problem with a smith compressor it has an inline 6 chrysler in it and the back 3. 4 5 6 are for compressing air but today we were blowing off the barns and it lost all air it will only build 30 psi and I can't get any more out of it does anyone have an idea on what may be wrong
