smoke screw!

R jd, Im in a pull tomorrow & need to impress a hardcore JD girl so i need to crank it up. how many turns can I go & will it damage anything in the pumps or gov if i open it too far? I turned the screw in 1/4" but now the rack no longer touches the gov arm so this is excessive? anyone know how sensitive this adjustment is or about how many turns etc i should go? Id like to take it from the 10-rack position to the 14 or so. right now you can pull it dead & only just a hint of smoke. Thanks so much! I know the risk to pistons & the crank ;( but its all stock so will be fine

it allows more fuel in. if nothing else it puts on a better show. everyone wants to see black smoke & it has dual exhaust too but it will indeed gain a small amount of power as well. any diesel does.

if the pumps were calibtated and the 10 rack means something you can turn it to about 16 maybe a bit more. After that you will be putting so much fuel in you will cool off the combustion and it will lose power. been there . I turned my 70 down about 3 turns (less smoke) and only lost about 4 horsepower.Paul

I have an R. I cant remember what mine is set at but I took it from a 10 to I think 18. It was the last # if I remember right. Under a heavy load she will smoke and have a cone fire like a hot farm stock truck. The fire wont be constant. Have fun.

Just remember-You break it she will be gone and You will still have the R! Not worth the possible damages. Can you afford a new tractor? Just my two cents with change back.

The "R" a friend had was set at "17" and would stand flame and smoke Black smoke..
The throttle was set as high as it would go...would run about 17 MPH on the road...
It still always pulled down shortly after the front would rise..
A very tough Beast, for sure...will pull 4x16" in 2nd at a dead idle..
We did have to stiffen the hitch, to keep it from flexing down..
Had 18.4x34" on it..

Make sure you are adjusting the RACKS and leave that Governor alone..(or you will need to put it all back together, once you open it up)..!!

Wonder how I found that out...?..!!

On the throttle linkage..I think Joe had the screw removed and did a little grinding to let the throttle advance some more..
