Smudge pots

Are smudge pots illegal to use? I heard they are. There is some forsale for a good price but I dont want to buy them and get a big fine or something for using them.

I dont know what they would be illegal for? Maybe its a local ordinance, or a state air quality issue. Nothing Im aware of nation wide though, unless you signed up under CSP.

Ive never seen them used anymore and heard they are illegal to use. Since Ive never seen them before I figured thats because they are illegal. My parents said back in the 70s everyone used them and the next morning everything was covered in soot. They said there was a black film on everything.

In the spring when it was going to frost and Id go out after midnight to cover up my stuff I notice a plane flying around. I alwasy wondered if it was a police plane looking for smudge pots.

I think its mostly a cost and efficiency issue. The only ones Ive ever been around were when I was working in a body shop 30 years ago. Its a wonder we didnt all die using that thing for heat. As I remember, it was a fuel hog, drinking 10 gallons of kerosene a night in the shop.

My CSP application that I just filled out this week listed replacing smudge pots as an approved conservation practice that they wanted you to do if you participated in the program.

They probably cost more in fuel to run now then what you would make off your crop. I think kerosene is like $5 a gallon or close to it. Smudge pots probably work alot better then a frost fan. Some people around here use some sort of heater in the grapes that burn diesel fuel.

Al Gore is a POS. Its colder here then ever, we always set record low temps. The normal for this time of years is in the 60s, we are in the 40s. It was even snowing last night.
