spark plug question

probably a dumb one but.....
will usuing a hotter plug in a engine that does NOT smoke or burn oil harm the engine? my TO-30 comes to mind.

Not one bit! These are low compression ratio engines(CR=6.5). My TO-30 has about 300 hrs on a emanufactured short block and a 350 on a rebuilt head. I switched to Autolite 3116 plugs from Autolite 386 on a recommendation from phil(va) and they are a hotter plug and are non-resisitor.
So far I couldn"t be happier.
If it"s too high a heat range the electrode may wear quicker and if the compression ratio was higher, you might have some detonation or knock under hot weather high power operation

A hotter plug is NOT recommended for heavy work.
A good motor with a lean carb should use the oem plug. A good thermostat should be considered mandatory in any tractor. Ferg distributors are usually worn and out of time. The advance curve should be something like the orig.. Spark plug extensions can be used on smokers. Remember, todays gas is VERY different from the 1950 version.

Here is the rule of thumb.
Hot plug for a cold "poor runner" engine.
Cold plug for a hot "lots of hp" engine.
The trick to help a worn engine which is burning oil or fouling plugs is to go to one step hotter plug.
Hope this helps.
