Spark plug wire tube

Is the tube necessary?
I've just finished my DIY electronic ignition for my 8N front mount distributor but the tabs on the tube for the plug wires are broken.
I can fix it but this is not an absolute restoration, but just enough restoration to get a working tractor.
With modern silicone plug wires is the tube needed anymore?

it's original but non-essential. if you have a fish tape, it's not a big deal to run new wires thru it. if you don't, many folks just zip-tie the wires to the outside of it or remove it completely and rig their own setup. in your case, with the broken tabs, i'd just say <bleep> it and go for the latter solution.

If those modern silicon wires are not copper core, you will have spark problems. See tips 7 & 27. https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/articles/artint268.htm

indeed. i had a friend helping me who is much more experienced with engines than i (and non-arthritic). he insisted the copper wires would be fine. they weren't ;)

but pertronix very calmly told me nope, he was wrong, and sent me a new unit to replace the fried one. i made a set of modern wires and all is well. i like those guys :)

edit: that may or may not be a benefit of purchasing the 91247 v the 1247. not sure if they replace the cheaper one for free when it's just a case of "you were an idiot."

Wait what about plug wires and EI? i have original wires with pertronix ignition and I tossed the tube when converting to 12v. am i screwed?

The tuuuuub it always gets me I feed #4/3 (it sure looks good with 3/4 in the same hole) wire thru the same hole when I get all the wires in #2 comes up short at the cap WTF. Before I make a post whuts the deal I see a empty hole for #1 then it hits me all the wires have a separate hole I put #2 in #3 hole. I am sure that lost ya and to make maters worse I have not used copper core wires in years and don't plan to. Its a myth they are a must did I say its a MYTH!!! scratch that off the list it nuttin but a folk lure. You do need a quality wire 6 are 12V dump those garbage copper core wires. I do several a year I have never needed to use something to fish'em in the tube even with a wad of extra wires in the tube use yer head and use the other wires to get them to feed start with #4 work your way to #1 only one wire per tub hole.

If you think you need help spray them with Windex life will be good.

My DIY electronic ignition still uses the points, so no problems with EMI affecting the hall sensor that Pentronix uses. My plug wires are just the cheapest ones I could get from the parts store and so far so good 🤞.
But thanks for the input regarding the tube.

I would use the conduit tube no matter which plug wires you have. Why have excess wires dangling around? They can easily get pulled off. Being contained being better organized. Fix it or find a used one to replace with. Just my quarter's worth of advice - inflation ya know.

Agree with Tim. Take the tube off the tractor and feed the wires thru using some dry lube or other. Do not have the ends on when feeding them thru. Put the distributor end on after fed thru.

Can anybody send link for the appropriate plug wires to use with Pertronix 12V EI conversion, 1940 9N? I have been using the original wires from 1940....

What I use is in this link, two of the wires work out of the box. You will have to cut the other two you will need the tool to crimp and the crimp ends. (Just 8 ns) seals the correct set.

i just bought what i measured to be the length of suppressor wire i needed, plus a bit, and 4 of each style end from my local auto parts store and made my own. no problems after three full years of use. seems to me one of my tools also worked great as a crimper, so i didn't need to buy one. gooder and gooder :)
