Bought this with a bad clutch, had a good used one out of a parts machine. Easy swap.... Nope! throw out ' bearing ' was missing chunks and the brass bushing was shot. Waiting on parts.

A lot of people are saying that you should keep any old parts throw out bearings from a cub "if they are in good shape" because the replacement China Junk graphite chews up fast and doesn t last very long.
I haven t used one myself to know but it sounds pretty likely.

I've read that also. My thoughts
are the new ones don't last
because folks throw one in and
assume that the whole drive train
is good. If you have other
issues, like the pilot bushing or
front bearing on the
transmission, you are gonna chew
up that graphite puck, Chinese,
American...... Won't matter.

Those throwout bearings typically don't get enough grease. It would require a whole lot of pumping on a grease gun to get in so much that it caused a problem.

The original bearings from IH came presoaked in oil. Many (all?) of the newer replacements come dry. Before installing one, I put it face down into a container of oil and let it marinate for a day or two. Then I make sure it is pumped full of grease.

replace it with the one that has a bearing instead of the graphite as mi just did that to one of mine now i dont need to worry about grease

The ball bearing replacements for the Cub graphite block have not had a very good track record. Stick with the graphite bearings, presoak them, and keep them greased.

I recently installed a ball bearing replacement knowing that they have not had a good track record. But, I had also found a lot of research concerning poor graphite density on the replacement graphite units. I was left feeling that there really isn t a good option for the cub anymore. So, I took a chance with the ball bearing unit. I haven t put many hours on it since, so too soon to tell. Hoping.....

Good evening, Brownie450 and all: Can some one here tell me what I should do to preserve my good throwout bearing in my 1958 cub? I do not want to run it too long without lube, but I have never tried to lube it so far. I only use the tractor a few hours a week when I have grass to cut, but still.....
.
Thanks for any advice!

The grease zerk for your throw out bearing is actually forcing grease to permeate the porous nature of the graphite ring within it. So soaking it in oil before install and adding cheap grease whenever it will take more is your best plan. Also do not hold the clutch pedal down when it is not necessary. There are a lot of stories about cub tractors smoking from the throw out bearing during parades.

It will be interesting to hear your long term report on that style of throwout bearing. I've heard that they don't hold up because the bearing holder is not concentric with the pressure plate.
