Splitting a vac

I picked up a vac a while ago
that had been sitting for an
unknown amount of time. With a
bit of carb and ignition work I
brought the ole girl back to
life. Every once and a while the
clutch would hang up. It seemed
to go away after a while and I
figured it was just a bit of
rust on the input shaft. Well a
a few weeks ago I used the vac
to tow around a larger tractor
and worked it fairly well. Since
then the clutch has been hanging
up most of the time. I picked up
4 trailer jacks today to use as
supports with 2 of them having
wheels so I can roll one of the
half's away. Question is, where
is the safest place to mount to?
Also, do I have to take both the
arm from the steering box and
the arm, or does the linkage rod
come off like lift gate pistons
on cars?

Do you have a wide front or narrow front?

In the first picture, remove the bolt close the radiator on
the steering arm and the arm bracket, and let it fall to the ground .

If you do not have a service manual, do yourself a favor and get one. Reasonably priced give John Saeli a call. 315-585-9826.CM

Do not know much about those old Cases beyond the fact that they could have 3 or 4 wheels. I mostly looked into it because of his description and the possibility of it popping off like a gas shock. There were three breakdown choices by serial number for the CNHI online catalog so I chose the middle. Could his tractor have a the type of rod end at the steering box arm that can be adjusted for wear as shown? If this is what you have you pull the cotter pin out and turn the big screw slot out a few turns and it should come off. Look closely at it right after you pull it off so you get the parts back in the right orientation when you reassemble it. You should be able to view all the parts breakdowns for your tractor from that link. If you know the serial number you may want to type VAC in the search box at the top. Then the 3 choices will pop up when you search. By the way luckily they rarely pop off; that could be if not deadly, at the very least a hair raising experience.

This one is a 46 vac with a narrow front end. If I'm not mistaken yours appears to be a mid 50s vac-14 with a wide front. I'm including pics of what I have. Both sides of the linkage really looks like the would pop off but idk and that's why I asked.

I bought an IT service manual for it today, but it doesn't to be on the bag of goodies I'm going to have to go back to the store and see if they left it out by accident.

The 1st link is to a later VA series parts manual but for the most part it covers your tractor. The drag link in your pic is located
on page 95.

The 2nd link is to an operators manual for VA series built prior to 1949. It isn't a repair manual but it has some info that you may want down the line like specs, valves adj, hydraulics, etc.

Thanks guys, I got the drag link off without to much of a hassle, the two clips gave me the only resistance. So now that I have that off, where is the safest place for the jacks on the front half? I think I can safely use one jack right under the torque tube, but there isn't much room around the front half.

Most of the vac's I have seen have a support for splitting cast into the top of the torque tube right under the gas tank with a 5/8 to 3/4 inch hole on each end. I have seen a stand made to attach to it.

Now that's purdy. I stopped e the ag shop and picked up my manual that didn't make it he last night. Manual days use a cherry picker for the front end so I have a friend gonna bring his over. Mine got roasted in a wild fire a few years back and I never got around to getting it replaced. Also borrowed a set of his tractor splitting stands he made.
