splitting nuts

Aside from a torch (don't have one), what is a good way to split off a large nut? Its 1-3/8's and they're on good. Can't get them busted loose. I've seen nut splitters that go up that size but no-one around here has one. 7/8 is about as big as they go.

I have a big chisel that I've used for years. 3/4 hex stock about 18 inches long. I use a 2 lb hammer. Once the nut is split just tilt the chisel a litte and it will open up and fall off. I've cut hundreds of them that way and prefer it to lighting the torch.

try my favorite electric tool - the angle grinder. they cut anything metal in a few seconds. might not be best for you if nuts in a tight spot or if new bolts can't be found.

If you Have good quality tools Mike Mac, Photo, Craftman just get a big long cheaper bar. The bolt should brake before the socket or racket is their guarantee. If you don't go get some your knuckles will thank you.

I have a little air grinder that holds dremel sized bits. I put a cutter bit in it and cut a groove down one side and use a cold chisel to split it apart then vise grips to screw it off.

Frequently after you give them a good notch with the chisel you will be able to unscrew the nut. Same with a nut cracker. Once you start spreading the nut it will come easily. This way if it's an oddball you can weld the chiseled nut and reuse it. Done that a few times.

Just make sure you can get new ones before you ruin these. Someone mentioned this before and had a hard time finding new ones. chris

I did it by crushing the gas tank in a motorcycle accident. I should still have a picture of the gastank somewhere.

Dremel tool with a tiny cut off wheel goes throught them like a hot knife through butter. I do it all the time now for hard to get at nuts that are froze on. Just did it on the back sprocket on my cousins Kawasaki 250. He rounded off a nut trying to get the sprocket off. I had the nut cut in half in about two minutes. Works great.

You can save some chiselling by drilling a hole parallel to the bolt right through the nut. Use a drill size to remove as much of the nut wall thickness as possible & close to the bolt. Then all you have to chisel is the remaining nut wall.

2nd vote for the dremel and the Quarter sized cutting wheels. Just finished cutting splitting four 15/16" nuts in the process of changing the brake pads on a 14t baler. Cut them almost all the way thru on 2 sides and then straight down with the chisel, they pop right in 1/2. Or you can just do one side and back the nut off. Never would have been able to get a grinder in the space I had to work with.
