Splitting Oliver 1650

I wrote last week about the (presumably) clutch slipping in my Oliver 1650. I've been going through my shop manual, and it appears to have several sections missing. If I follow everything correctly to split the tractor I have to pull the PTO shaft before anything else. My real question is whether or not after pulling the PTO shaft, separating the chain coupler and removing the body panels & gas tank I can get to the tranny & clutch w/o first pulling the engine & tranny as a unit.

I keep reading where you need to pull the PTO shaft before pulling the engine. We pulled our engine without removing the PTO shaft and put it back in the same way. And it still works! Our old engine had very large holes in both sides.

We just unbolted the engine from the clutch housing and left all that in the frame. Our old engine had very large holes in both sides.

Don't know about a hydrapower drive, but a direct drive only model is pretty easy.remove the stub pto shaft by removing the snap ring.remove the short plunger inside, then pull the live pto shaft back about 2 to3 ft. using a 3/8bolt about 6 in. long.undo coupler chain and coupler on front of hollow shaft near bell housing.downhill from there, don't have to remove anything else but bell housing to change clutch.be sure to make some kind of mark on 3/8 bolt to reinstall shaft the same depth so it goes all the way back into flywheel

You need to pull the engine and hydra/power out as one unit and then seperate them to replace the clutch. If the head bolts with the threads on them are in the right place, mid engine next to each other, use the rear one to lift the engine. WB<><.

Sorry for the earlier double post. I went back to add to the first post the wrong way.

We did our farming 1650 about 4 years ago. I have also pulled the engine from a 1650 that I am trying to build as a puller some day. The PTO shaft and 2 speed was not removed on either one. Now, I am getting ready to do a 1655 engine rebuild and I will probably do it the same way.
