Sprag units

Is there any way you can tell whether a ampla-torque unit might be good or bad when you have it in your hands like when you take one out of a dead tractor? It may seem OK but of course there is no load on it.

Assuming your talking about a later unit with a sprag, there are several things to check. The bearings wear & don't hold the parts centered on one another. The small brass strips, on the inside of the sprag, wear and break in the middle and then can't supply enough torque to "set" the sprags properly. If the sprag has slipped much, the inner race acted upon by the sprag will be rough from chatter/grabbing.

When I rebuilt mine on a 1964 jetstar it was worn out so when you put together on a bench put it in a vise with it in a vertical position. If it is good it should turn one way easy. and the other way it should lock up if the roller elements, wavy spring, and c shaped metal parts are all good.

I can't say for sure if this would be the same for a tractor as for an automatic trans, but when I rebuild a transmission if the sprags don't turn like a new bearing one way and hold with 0 movement in the opposite direction, they get replaced. My guess would be if it's rough, it's got a problem.
