I need to buy a good used bailer to do 2k-3k bales per year.I dont know anything about them.If you guys have any info on makes,models that makes a good bale PLS help. TKS in advance for any response. Dan

If you are unfamilier with a baler you better get a New Holland or John Deere. There is a million of them around so you can get advice and parts from anybody.

If you do not have a clue about them by a NH or JD which ever dealer you have close by. Balers are machines that you either need a good dealer close or you need to know how to work on them. Lots of small problems crop up with them and most are a simple fix but if your green that can be a real pain

These guys are right.After you buy your baler,imediatly go and buy a book!Priceless! The JD 300 series is one of the best balers out there.NH:277,310,315,320 are goodones.

For that money, a guy can find a good John Deere or New Holland. I have owned both at one time or another and both make good balers. Look for dealer support, that is one of the most important factors. Then find a baler, a 336 John Deere or a 275 New Holland would be in your price range...for a couple examples. happy hunting.

Thanks for the help.I roll most of the hay thru my 855 nh. Its getting real pricy to square bail, if i can find someone when i need them.I just thought i should get my feet wet. tks again Dan

the second you buy a bailer come back to this site to reead/learn everything you can about that model ask questions here!! this site is mutch more important than the model you choose. dealer support is important but you need to be your own expert on the model you buy. Dealer supports for rich people.

My 2 cents worth on used balers - know who your closet and supporting dealer is in your area and you also need one that is as interested in getting your hay baled as you are. In this area New Holland has the best support so about 80% of the square balers are NH brand. The local green dealer (they do make some good balers) prefers to work the lawn equipment more then farm equipment so his support is a computer and UPS for getting you parts. Our NH dealer has several different parts balers in his yard and maintains almost everything that could be needed in the way of new replacement parts in stock at his facility. In addition they are a 24/7 operation during hay season and stay open all night if necessary with a service vehicle and baler tech.
I also saw someone mention a NH 320 being a good baler and the only two I knew of around here were self destruction models in short order. They are an extremely high capacity baler with a very fast plunger rate that seems to tear them up quickly. Also, a NH technical rep told me they were not heavy enough duty for what they were doing as they were built on a lightweigh frame design. I saw one at a farm auction that had repair welds and angle iron welded all over the thing to hold the bale chamber together. Just what I know about them and I have a NH 273 like a half dozen neighbors so the skill to keep one going is available close by with several folks. A NH 273 seems to be a good model (1970's era baler) with enough refinements to make it a good strong and steady piece of equipment which would handle your amount of hay very easily. A NH 310 and 315 would be an improvement over the 273 and I know of a few of them around which are also trouble free and fairly simple balers. Good luck in your choice, Hal.

My vote is for New Holland...but as mentioned above, go with the brand with the best local service. If you decide to go with New Holland, you might want to think about options - such as the super sweep pickup and bale throwers - they make your job quicker and easier in the field.

I have had two one I gave away it was a 65 N.H. the one I have had and operated now for 8-9 years is a 273 N.H. I have a buddy that has a 336 J.D. He says mine will out bale his.. Dont know about that. Both Ive worked on and ran. Do great jobs. I got mine at auction for 1100.00.. He got his two years ago for 2500.00 Almost same vintage I believe..Buy a goood one or you'll have to pay $$$$ to get it to be one. The first one I bought for 200 rebuilt for 800. BUT I learned ALOT about a baler in doing that and helped me buy the 273.
How much is your budget for one??

I bought an old NH 273 that had been sitting outside for at least 5-6 years. I bought the parts manual and owners manual, too (a must if you want to do any work on it yourself). Parts are readily available, although not neccessarily cheap.

I almost completely rebuilt the knotters, so I learned alot about them, as well as all the other critical adjustments that are required to get the thing to make decent bales. I put up about 200-500 bales a year and it"s a hobby for me. I think that you need to have some mechanical aptitude if you"re thinking about a fixer upper, though.

you don't by chance have a rotary rake for sale do you?

no rake I sold 2 years ago been using the new ones assemble for dealer to test run for him last few years so did not need to own one. Roatry rakes are fine but unless you get the real large units really takes long time to get the raking done,like it does with the regular bar rakes. I assemble few of the rotary styles and did not one to own one just because of dollars. will let you know if one comes in,how big you want or do you want just a single unit.

Thanks! All I need is a single; I have a very small acreage. I'd prefer a Krone or Kuhn as dealers fairly nearby for parts. My direct email is [email protected]. I just figure I'll have to travel a ways to get one; most folks here use the big V rakes & round balers; I just square bale to feed my donkeys.
