Squirrel problem

Anyone one got a solution to get rid of these pesky tree rats.Shooting and trapping out of the question, tree huggers here in the city.
Thinking about using a poison to thin the herd.
Have not found a supplier of a poison for squirrels.
Lead poison seems to work on the farm.
Thanks

gtokid1.........wait until the tree huggers find out that they are the rare and endangered gray squirrel like here on Ft Lewis Wash. They want the new "cross-base" highway to be "tunneled" so the squirrels can safely travel from one side of the highway to the other side. No, I am NOT making this up.

Actually pump "air-rifles" are a silent phifft.

But seriously, use some regular rat poison with "warfarin" in it. mix it with some dried feed corn. Simple, eh? .......frustrated Dell

Live trap and a 40 gallon trash can full of rain water.
My neighbor here in the city is on perpetual squirrel patrol. Probably takes out 3 a week for as many months as the water is unfrozen in the trash can. I've been here for 4 years and he has been doing it since long before I came. He never runs out of them.
Bait the trap with peanut butter and hide it behind some shrubs or flowers so no bunny huggers see it. Squirrels will still find it.

Well, first of all. How are they doing YOU ill? If they are coming into your house and stealing your beer - that is a problem. If they are nesting in your roof/attic that can be dealt with. Really, what is your problem with our cute little furry friends ? I live 20 mins from the local town and feed them, hardly any have attacked me or violated my wife or dog ( except that nasty one with the Uzi). b

The spinning pop can on a rod over a bucket of water rat trap
works on squirrels too.
use a garbage can with a foot of water in it and two
spinning pop cans with the peanut butter in the middle of them,
and a stick laying against the can to climb up.

hiding a live trap in a garbage can on it's side is unseen.
to load or 'unload' carry the can into your garage

if the critters are getting in somewhere, seal up every opening except one...
(PVC steers them good)
live trap or conibear inside at that opening....
build a box with a lid around it inside if you are worried they will get in
and miss the trap

check all your local laws, every place is different on what is allowed

Hey theres a idea, if you tell the squirrely people that you are farm raiseing them for meat. then the gov. will pitch in and help pay you for harvesting them.

If you use poison keep in mind that anything that might eat the dead squirrel can also die from the poison to. Found that out recently when feeding some rats in my barn. Seems a cat ate one of the dead rats and is now in the same place the rat is.

Little story about squirrels.
Some years ago I bought a little house in So Minneapolis to fix up and sell.
The place had a 6' cedar fence in back so no one could see in.
Had it pretty well done inside and was working on the exterior.
Spent the morning replacing the cedar plywood soffit where the squirrels had chewed through and were getting into the attic. Went inside for some lunch and heard some kind of scraping sound on the outside.
Went to look and sure enough a squirrel was already chewing it's way through the brand new piece of plywood. After work I went to Fleet Farm and bought a pellet gun. Moved in to the house shortly after and that winter I shot 53 squirrels in my back yard. I only counted confirmed kills.
When they were cold I would take a utility knife, open the belly on them and lay them on a stump in the back yard. In no time the crows would flock down and make a big racket as sometimes 20 or more would pick the carcass completely clean. In no time!
Fast forward to spring...
There was an old, old lady on my block who every day would shuffle up and down the sidewalk to get a little air and exercise. Nice old lady, talked to all the neighbors as she ambled by.
One day I was outside and she came up and talked about the weather etc, then she lamented that there were so many crows these days. She hated crows! Then she said; "We used to have a lot of squirrels around here and I enjoyed seeing them.
Now there's nothing but crows around anymore. Do you think the crows could be killng the squirrels?"
Of course I told her that I didn't think the crows could kill the squirrels but did mention they would eat a squirrel if they found it already dead.
"I know that" she said "Crows are such awful birds. I just hope they aren't killing the squirrels because there's not many around anymore."

Sounds like the posters never heard of squirrel stew.Friend made stew by browning the meat in a fry pan and finishing the stew in an electric coffee pot.He added a can of vegetable soup to the pot.Two fellows showed up when a pot was done.THey had never eaten squirrel stew, thought it was disgusting.Jim talked them into tasting some, they ate the whole pot.My wife wont eat wild game.My son made some chili with deer meat in it.She ate some, said it was very good.Told her later it was deer meat.

Personally I like to use an air rifle. My dad always taught me, if you kill it, you eat it. As I shoot them, I clean them and put them in the freezer until I've got a good mess. This way, I control the squirrel population and get a very tasty meal all in one fail swoop while maintaining a personal code of ethics.

Evidently you've never heard of the ignition wire eating squirrels from hell. They're just bushy tailed rats. You can think "cute" all you want, I'll continue shooting them.

There's a whole world for them to live in. They don't have to move onto my property.

Type squirrelinator in google. Great trap. I caught over 150 squirrels and then drowned them in less than 2 weeks. Haven't seen a squirrel in a while.

There's no code of ethics for shooting bushy tailed rats. I certainly have no desire to eat one of those little vermin.

Grew up hunting squirrels.Buy a box of 22 shorts from The Western Auto for 35 cents.Take the dogs to the woods and hunt squirrels.Skin them, cut the meat into 6 or 8 pieces.Brown the meat in a fry pan in some olive oil.Get a good size sauce pan on the wood stove, Add a can of string beans with liquid.Put in a chicken and beef bullion cube.Cut potatoes up small, add carrots and onions from your garden put in a teaspoon of sugar.Cook slow, when the potatoes are done stew is ready to eat. Those who refuse to eat wild game eat a lot of chicken and pork.Pigs and chickens will eat baby rats and other rotten stuff.Squirrels live on nuts and seeds and corn.Rabbits make a fine stew but the coyotes have killed them off here.Browning the meat improves any stew plus adding spices you like.Feel bad for any one who didnt grow up hunting squirrels with a good dog along. The dog can see them better when the leaves are still on.
