Stallintg 8N

After working hard raking for about an hour 8N will stall. It acts like you turned the key off. If I wait a few minutes it will start up again and run for 15 min. then stall again. Only seems to do it after it has been working hard. Its a 50 8n with a side mount dis. Any suggestions where to start looking?? Thanks Glenn

6v or 12v? It might make a difference in diagnosing the problem.

As a good rule of thumb, a 1 - 2 minute run times is usually the condenser, ballast resistor, or vacuum lock....or, failure to turn the gas on. A 5 minute run time is usually fuel screens. A 15 minute run time is usually the ignition switch. A one hour run time & then restarts after it cools down is usually the coil.

Sooooo........crank it up & put it to work. As soon as it stalls, grab a spare spark plug, ground it to the block & check for spark. Look for a big, bright blue spark. If you do not have any spark, check 'up-stream' from the plugs to find the problem.

If you had a 1950 frontmount, I'd go w/ the rule of thumb & say it was probably the coil. But, you have a side distributor & round coils are just about bullet proof. I'd do some checking before I bought a new coil. The usual 'failure point' on a side distributor is the insulator in the distributor body for the coil primary wire.

Good luck & check back if you need more help.

Glen this sounds like what I just went through with my 49 8N. Would run for a period of time then quit. After removing and cleaning the entire fuel system with no improvement in addition to new points in the distributor, I discovered I had a coil problem. Once coil was corrected at a electrical shop she runs.

Your frontmount coil is not as robust as his sidemount coil. What was it that the electrical shop did to correct the problem on your coil?

As with any of them the first place to start is check for spark when it shuts down. Don't wait even a minute to do so jump right off it when it dies and check for spark. If you have no spark then you at least know its an ignition problem not fuel or vapor locked. Running one hard can get the fuel line hot enough to boil the gas and that will vapor lock it

The 8N is still 6 volt. When it stalled it still had a full fuel bowl. Ill have to try checking for spark nekt time it stalls. Its semi retired like me so it dos"nt work hard very often. thanks Glenn

A full sediment bowl doesn't tell you much. The tractor can be out of gas & still have fuel in the bowl because the bowl is lower than the gas line. Check for fuel flow by removing the bolt at the bottom of the carb.

A run time of approximately one hour is usually a coil gettting hot, but then they usually won't start back up until cooling completely off, normally overnight, then it will start up just fine and run good for about an hour again. Usually a bad switch will run for about 15 minutes then quit and takes about 30 minutes before it will restart. You can jump across the switch and see if it will start up when it quits, if it does the switch is worth a try first since they are only about $10.00.

I had the same problem plus hard starting. It was the ballast resistor. NAPA had one in stock. It is the same as 32 to 48 Ford V8.

Have a nice day
