standard auto trans topic revisited

I've said for the past ten years that a manual is a theft deterrent. I'm just amazed at the number of people that have no idea how to use one. I've even had car salesmen be totally flummoxed by them.

yea i know what you mean. when i get my liscense im gonna drive my old 83 gmc 6.2 diesel with the 4 speed manual. it takes awhile to get use to driving it so a theif probably wont get to far with it

I'm currently occasionally driving an '84 with the same setup, and 3.42 gears. It SUCKS, as the 3.42 rear end, with no OD, has the diesel SCREAMING at 65 MPH, and the tranny's gear ratios are a POOR match for the engine's power curve.

I wish I had the time and $$$ to swap in an NV-4500. It would be INTERESTING to see how it would drive then.

Not the first time something like this has happened- every see a woman who learned on a PowerGlide try to find reverse in a VW Beetle? As a point of info- some European countries issue restricted licenses to people who test with auto transmissions, restricted to auto trans only, may not get commercial license either until learn to drive with clutch. RN

I tried to get my wife to learn how to drive a stick, she panicked on the highway and nearly killed both of us. Nothing but autos for her.

Oh........that makes a difference being a 4x4.
There must be something manual with O.D. in a later GMC/Chev 3/4 or 1 ton truck that will bolt in?

If we want to get real nastey. Lets put the unsuspecting driver into something manual with a "Three In the Tree" shifter.

That right there is just plain funny as he11, I don't care who you are. I'm prety sure that all of us on this site atleast know how to drive stick, if not a little rough...

Wow, well I kind of like it, it is a deterrent, unreal how a standard trans is fas becoming a thing of the past, well everything I own is a stick, except the lawn tractor !

Great story. Who would've thought, but then after a moments reflection I can see it happening very easy. My dad taught both myself and my sister learn to drive on a stick shift. I remember she got frustrated with him so he sent her out to drive around in a forty acre hay field by herself for a couple of hours. She was in a '65 half ton with a small block and granny four speed. By the time she was done she had the clutch work down to a science! To bad not everyone has the option to do stuff like that with/to their kids.

I've got two trucks with 6.2 diesels, 3.42 axles, and the factory four-speed manual with .73 overdrive (NP833). Spins around 1900 RPM at 65 MPh which is perfect for the 6.2 torque and efficiency curve. Also got a 1/2 4WD truck with NP833 four-speed manual OD and 3.08s - and it's my best mileage 6.2 on a flat highway but otherwise, the 3.08s and OD are a bit much for the low torque of a 6.2.

GM had the New Process 833 four-speed manual with overdrive as original equipment with the 6.2s, right from the first year 1982 (for 1/2 tons).
Later years use the NV3500 five-speed with same OD ratio.

Nice. Reminds me of the 80's sci-fi movie "The Philedelphia Experiment." Two sailors go through a time warp from WWII to the 1980's. One of them tries to steal a car (an automatic), but can't get it moving becasue "there's no clutch."

Seriously thought, I'm a firm believer in the fact that everyone should learn how to drive a manual. My Dad taught me how to when I was 16, even though my first car was an automatic. It's just a good skill to have in case of an emergency.
