Standard vs Row crop

Most of the pulls around here won"t let the rowcrop tractors run anything bigger than a 15.5x38 tire, but will let the standards run 18.4x34 tires. This is even when the row crops could be ordered from the factory with 18.4x34 tires. Why is this? Can someone please explain to me why this should be? Seems to me that this gives the standards an unfair advantage most of the time. Thank you

Must be most of the pullers are pulling standards. Going to have to get the rules changed. If you can't beat them, join them. If you can't get the rules changed might have to get a standard.

Gee what a smart a-- answer. I dont even pull. Was only curious about the reasoning for it. Looks like someone needs to get a life!

Standard or Wheatland tractors are allowed wider tires because they were built that way.
Most of them had shorter tires as well,e.g.,
18.4 or 16.9 30"s as opposed to row crop 11.2-15.5 34/38"s. Similar sized footprints which give equal working speeds in same gear. 1st gear
in Standard gives comparable field speed as 1st in RC. Depending on track conditions/pull rules
there would be a bigger advantage to putting taller tire on Standard than wider on RC.

As for "factory" availability..what left the dealer as "stock" very often wasn"t what left the factory. Rules like this tire issue are often
put in place by purists with a social/political axe to grind and not by people who enjoy competition. The words "fair" and "tractor pull rules" should only be used together to describe the location or origin of particular rule, not whether it gives someone an equal chance at winning. LOL

with the 18.4 having almost a 100 sq in more tread on the ground than the 15.5 I can't imagine any club having a rule like that . Ours are all about sq.in don't care what tire you run as long as you stay within the sq.in. look at the tractors the management have is the answer to your question.

Our club has a similar rule, though you don't see many standards pull because they can't compete.

13.6x38. 14.9x38, 15.5x38's will all outpull the short fat tires. Of course most tracks around here are made up of some good tight clay. Some are like pulling on asphalt. On a loose dusty track though, I can see how a wider footprint would be more competitive.
