starter drag

I have a brigs and straten engine that I can get started but if it dies it turns real slow or stops and will not start. I have tried putting new ground straps on and even tried putting a ground from the starter to the frame, but still have the same problem and it will not turn over once it has started and then died.

Post the mod/type numbers of eng-is this a starter/generator or a starter motor with a gear drive for flywheel?

If it turns part way and stops, You have either a valve clearance problem or a worn camshaft. This is especially true if yours has overhead valves.

sometimes they have better compression when hot-That is the temp. everything broke in at- and are much harder to start then.

The B&S compression release depends on valve adjustment being right on spec. I just worked on a B&S OHV 14.5 hp engine that really struggled to get cranking. The valve clerence was really loose .010+. I adjusted the rocker arms to .005 cold and it cranks good now.
