Starter drive... Again.

My old style starter drive is shot and I'm getting a new style PD type. I have a question though. The gear or bendix on my old one is chewed up purdy bad.( The reason I'm changing it in the first place). I checked the fly wheel while the starter is off and it looked good exept for about 2 inches. The back side of that 2" scpace is kinda rounded off but no where near as bad as the drive itself. Will this be alright to replace with the new drive or will it in turn do the same thing to the new one and ruin it? It looks like the old bendix wasn't making to good of a contact.

JDGa Yes replace your starter drive with the new style Maybe the flywheel starter ring gear will last a few more years for you.So you don't have to split your tractor, its worth a try.Your engine will almost always stop at the same place when you shut it off.thats why the 2 inch bad spot is there.

JD, no doubt I would change the drive and see how it does.

You will probably have time to fix anything else, by what you learn, hear, and feel after the change the drive, and before you mess up the new drive.

JD, Some years ago Ford changed their drives and when you put a new one on you need to redrill the pin hole 1/2 in. farther back toward the starter. Otherwise it engages to far and that's whats causing your problem. I learned that the hard way like most people do. Billy Baaaa

I didn't think I would have to do that on the new positive drive type. Someone said it would go on as is. Is there a way to measure before I install it to make sure it's gonna make good contact?

Didn't have to re-drill anything on mine when I went from old style to new style jsut a few months ago.. You will be amazed how much better the new style works.

Thanks for the reply Tom. I was think'n that was what you told me the other day. I'll give'r a try.

What's the difference? I didn't realize there were 2 types. I've got a new one that was in a box of auction stuff so now I wonder which type it is.

(quoted from post at 19:13:45 01/06/08) Quick identification...old style has obvious external spring..new style has no external spring.

Gotcha.
Are we allowed to offer stuff for sale here? I've got a few things that came in that auction box I don't need but someone may.

Put some layout die on the starter drive teeth then put the starter in and start the engine a few times. Remove the starter and check for contact marks to make sure you have good engagement.

If you don't have access to any layout dye then use some white paint and let it dry before assembling the starter on the tractor.
