Well I did It you know how some people cant leave things alone, Thats me, the new improved starter drive the one you should not turn out because it locks out ya that one I just had to see if it works well in my defence they should put a warning on that thing, Well I tried the wire wheel but that did not work any suggestions on how to get this thing to retract.

Thanks Steve

I did the same thing, but I just put mine back together that way, no problem. Of course, my tractor was split so it was really easy to make sure the starter drive gear engaged the ring gear. It'll retract itself on the first start.

Same thing happened to mine. Never could get it to retract-just installed the starter the way it was. Haven't had a problem yet.

Just did the same yesterday. Go ahead and put it in and it will be fine. As soon as the engine comes up to life it will retract. It sure is nice for it actually spin the engine over until it starts rather than have it spin loose till the battery is dead. Be sure you clean up the mating surfaces of your starter as well. My starter now turns twice as fast since I simply cleaned up the mating surfaces on the end plates, and the surface where the starter mounts to the block to get a good ground to the starter. Believe it or not mine spins over good with 6 guage cables on it at around 30 degrees. I was lucky to get it started at all below freezing before due to slow starter and bendix spinning free every time a piston passed the compression stroke.

take a piece of tie wire and flatten it with a hammer. there's a ball bearing on one side of the drive. push the wire down alon side it and pull the drive back into position then pull the tie wire out. may have to do this a couple of times sice the drive turns as you pull it.
