I recently bought a Farmall Super MD and need a starter for it. Will any farmall 3 bolt starter work? If not what models do I need to look for? Thanks

you need one off a diesel i think you need a SMD, 400D or a 450D. I dont think the the MD is a three i belive its a two bolt. but the diesel starter is larger than the gas starters so there not intercahgeable

I may be wrong, but I think the diesels use a different starter than the gassers. I believe a SMD has a 12v system, which is not a big deal. But, I think the starter gear is meshed with the ring gear buy the means of the starter lever and not a bendix type as the gassers. As you pull the starter lever towards you, it meshes the gears before it energizes the switch on top of the starter, right guys?

If your SMD is below serial # 28181 the original type which is the same as a MD is needed. If serial 28181 or higher its different than the one below the above serial #. For it you need one like came on it or one from a SMDTA for original type. But with this last starter type several IH diesel starters will work by changing the way starter is operated.
Both type SM starters are 3 bolt mount but the clutch housings are different. The later uses same clutch housing as gasoline tractors.

Thank you everyone for your help so far. The tractor is a 1952 Super MD s/n F 2797J, so that means I need the early starter. So one off a MD will work? I thought MDs used a 2 bolt? Thanks again.

Hi BOBM25: You're right in that at least the one I grew up on had a lever which manualy pushed the starter into the ring gear befor making electrical contact. This was handy during the coldest starts below zero. One could keep the starter ingaged a little longer to get it running a little faster before stopping the starter. I suppose there were limited number that had this since factory changes were coming fairly fast during those years. agpilot

Starter IH # 61061 DA, Delco # 1108913 was used on MD, stage 1 SMD and WD6, SWD6 series until they went to the frame rail chassis. Then on stage 2 and SMTAD and SWD6 after frame rails started being used a change to a positive engagement starter was made on these tractors with electric contact switch located on starter.
All these starters and others with 3 bolt mounting will bolt up. Trouble is the MD and stage 1 SM used a clutch housing that even though it looks the same as a stage 2 SM has a different distance from flywheel gear when starter is mounted. On the stage 2 SM the clutch housing is the same between gas and diesel and has the same spacing as T/A tractors so several starters will work if changes to energize them are made.
