Starter motor

Can you tell me where the solenoid is on this starter ? It s on my case dozer. One loud click I can hear the starter gear jump forward and the spring as it releases but not crank. I m used to it being piggy backed on the starter. Tapped it good no such luck.

The solenoid is underneath, built into the housing.

The motor is on top, reduction gear driven to the shaft below.

The motor is probably a permanent magnet motor, which means there are magnets
epoxied inside the case. They do not like being hit with a hammer!

It is a gear drive starter and the solenoid un under the motor body. It can move the drive into the flywheel and not turn on the electricity.
Failed contactor inside. Or the starter motor is OPEN circuited, or the brushes are worn/hanging and not touching. Jim

Can it be jumped, yes but in that application it will be
trickier than the dickens. See the starter I attached in
the link. It has multiple pictures if you click the black
bars under it. You will see a terminal on the back side
with an insulated cover that is where you need to jump
to. I would recommend a good heavy jumper cable set
with well insulated clamps. Peel back the insulation
and clamp it on. Then touch the other end to the outer
terminal where the battery cable hooks to. You may
need someone to hold the switch to the start position
while you cross jump the terminals. This is to energize
the solenoid engage coil to kick the drive in. I worked
at a bakery that has a bunch of those little Cummins in
delivery vans. There is a L shaped copper contact in
the solenoid that burns down and eventually stops
contacting, we kept several on hand to replace when
needed. Of course it could also be the brushes are
shot, in that case it will not respond to a cross terminal
jump.

GOOGLE: ''Nippondenso starter solenoid contacts'' or ''Dodge Cummins starter solenoid contact replacement''. (Same principal as your tractor starter.)

EASY to do and a lot cheaper than a new starter from the stealership.
