Starter on TO30

Hey guys trying to get this 52 TO30 going. My question when the starter is removed and you bench test the starter should it kick the drive forward and spin very rapidly?
Mine is not doing this
What should it do when you hook the battery straight to it?

Good question. I direct tested a starter the same way. It spun fast but the gear would not go out unless there was a little drag on it.

I figured it was good and that since I could not hold the motor solid that twist in the starter housing was eating up enough energy to keep the gear from throwing out.

The starter is an inertia type, that means that the pinion should fly out to engage the Flywheel ring when you apply power to it and it does not matter if it is in the Tractor or in a vise on the Bench, it should work the same. Just make sure that the connections are good when you are testing it on the Bench, the ground may be poor.
What it usually is, the Pinion and the "thread" that it runs on is possibly dirty, you should wash it with some gas and get it clean. Where it is mounted on the engine, any oil that leaks is thrown onto it and the Clutch is throwing dust from the Clutch plates at it as well. If you clean it and it still doesn't throw out, you should look inside as it could be a dirty commutator and brushes maybe dirty or worn. You can check the brushes without too much trouble, look and see how far down in their holders they sink, if they are below the top of the holders then there is some wear on them and maybe the spring that pushes them down-wards is unable to do that. When they are like that if you spin the starter the brushes may spark a lot, that tells you there is wear on them or it is dirty. Clean the commutator with fine emery tape or whatever you guys use, so that is it nice and bright and clean....John

Not only should the drivepinion move out it should be able to transmit torque. To test that, you need to jam a small block of wood between the drive gear and the nose cone then engage the starter. If the motor hums but does not spin and the gear doesn"t move than it"s trying to transmit torque. If the motor spins and makes a whirring noise but the gear does stays locked than the drive is bad.
