starter problem with old Ford

push button starter on old Ford tractor just "clicks". It started and ran fine but when I stopped to open a gate, it wold not re-start. I think it is about a "78, 20+ horse power. Don"t know where to find the model number.

Your push button should run down to a Solenoid somewhere close to starter. First check to see that fire is going to the solenoid when button is pushed in to start. If so then make sure your battrie is up enough to turn motor over. Sometimes that click happens cause the battery is to low to turn over starter.
So jump it and see first if it turns over starter!
If it won't turn over motor. Then turn key on and take something metal and jump from one side of the solenoid to the other post on big post on it that runs down to the starter!
IF it turns over doing that .. then the solenoid is bad and replace it.
If that did not turn it over. You may have to replace the starter cause it has a bad place in it.

if it is clicking, that tells me the solenoid is still working, so I wouldnt worry about that.

as long as your battery stil has juice in it, and your charging system is operational, I wouldnt worry about it.

But, give the starter some easy taps with a hammer(or something hard), sometimes the brushes inside the starter get suck, and this will free them up.

It will happen again, so you will still need to replace the starter, but it might get you back to the barn/done for the day.

Soliniod clicks and thats all. Lots of times that is a simple poor connection at the battery or one of the cables. Or if your charging system is not working as it should be you might have a weak battery which will also do the same thing. Or your starter maybe going bad

Starter could have a bad spot in the armature winding, or it could be dragging from worn out bearings. Or the brushes could be worn out, or as noted the battery connections could need a cleaning. I put this in the order of most expensive to least expensive and least common to most common.

If it's a 1000 series Ford , See if your PTO is engaged..They won't start if it's engaged.. Or maybe the clutch pedal had a switch on it..
