Starter Push Button

Is there an easy way to replace the rod the pushes the starter button. Its a 2n or 9n I"m not sure, hard to get serial # for sure. The push button in front of the gear shift its the one that screws in the top of the steering box /trans cover. It apeers that you have to take the steering box off to get the trans cover off to get at that rod that pushes the start button.I"m hoping sombody here has a better way.
Thanks

That rod is behind the solonoid under the dash, just take the solonoid off and the rod is behind it.(under the battery)

I have found it ,can you just pull it out and replace or repair it .I tryed to pull it out but no luck do I just need to pull harder.Where can I get a new one.I belive it is worn out the starter won't enguage if I pull the switch off I can manulley enguage it and starter will spin

With the starter switch off, observe the rod while pushing on the push botton. Does it move forward? If it moves forward but not enough to work the switch, then things have worn abit. Perhaps you can weld up something to make it longer.

Pete,

You probably have wear on all 5 parts in the "chain":

#9N11450B...Switch Assy
#9N11512...Starter Push Rod
#2N11515...Starter Push Lever
#9N11511...Starter Push Lever Rod
#9N11506...Starter Switch Button Assembly

If I had to place a bet based on my experiences...I'd say #2N11515 is contributing the most to the problem.

You may be able to pull #9N11450B and, if you're good (which is significantly better than I), weld a small "pip" on the top of the button such that you take up some of the total slack in the chain. Good luck with that...but I think it's do-able. This doesn't fix the root cause, but may give you another decade or so before it has to be torn apart. ;=)

Thanks nnalert,The switch assy is ok and starter switch is new but I do belive all that other stuf is pretty old an wore out.the welding thing sounds like the trick

It seems that we have talked about putting a blob of solder on top of the replacement starter switch, that seems to now be concave, nstead of flat.
