Starter Question

I have a 1948 8N. Last spring I bought a new starter with drive from this site. For the past few days, when I first engage the starter, it turns over very slowly at first (while making a lot of noise)and after cranking for about 5 seconds it speeds up to normal cranking speed and then starts. A few times it has stopped cranking like it would with a dead battery. I should have checked the battery connection but I didn't as it looked OK. The battery was new last year, and I checked the connections to the solenoid. Would you think this is a problem with the starter drive, the solenoid, or the battery connections?

Not the bendix (starter drive), the others things you said, possibly, possibly also brushes, or maybe bushings.

Have ya had some moisture lately??????
Could also be , that you are losing the ground, between the back of the starter and the housing, or as Dunk says a combination of bad/dirty connections.
Cheap fix.........Clean all yer contacts....Make em', bright and tight!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lol:

6v or 12v?

Jump it. If the starter works, you can eliminate it as a problem. (see tip # 43 at the link below for the safe way to jump it)

It's very difficult to tell if battery cables are good by looking at them. If you can't remember the last time you replaced them, it's probably time to do that. And, clean all the connections bright & shiny while you're there.

Bill2 ,I have heard of the new starter drives slipping when they first engage.I put on on one of my starters and it did that the first 10 starts or so.Its workin fine now,but who knows how long it will work.Another product from the land of ALL MOST RIGHT.

My guess is the drive gear did not fully retract and engage the ring gear.. and thus ground instead of engaged... Perhaps debri, moisture, corrosion on the shaft.. low rpms.. ( bad battery cable? ).. etc.

clean up all the connections and pull the starter and check the shaft for any wet lube or corosion.. clean with carb or brake cleaner..

My '89 Ford Escort. 100,000.mile preventative maintenance.......replace starter.

NAPA...129.00 reman.

Didn't last for 4 starts. BUSTED BENDIX.

Took back under warranty? Trouble was, until I could get to the maintenance job.....30 days went by.

So, another NAPA rebuild. Really sounds goofy, howevers, I GOT USED TO IT, somehow!

No FORD type OEM garage or parts here, locally, anymore!

Thanks to all for the comments. I now know how to go about it without wasting time & money.
