According to my starter guy, the field windings are half the thickness for 12 volts as they would be for six volts.The 12 volt starter doesn't slam the ring gear like a 6 volt starter on 12 volts does. It also doesn't turn the engine a 100 miles per hour. Other than that I don't know how to tell the difference.
I had a starter on a WD45 converted to 12 volts is why he explained this to me. This tractor is used in a stable to run a manure spreader , and I was changing the starter every ten months. It's had this converted starter for about 3 years now without trouble.
