Starter questions

I have a 1952 TEA 20 (# is TEA 283660). The coil has been moved to the front side of the distributor. The tractor has been changed from 6 to 12 volt. The # on the starter is 2502 1B and another number under that one is M35G A1. The coil will not fit where I believe it should go because the starter is too long. Any ideas why? Also the part next to the oil filler tube in the photo does not seem in the right place. Where should it go? Also in an earlier post I stated that the number on the transmission casting case was 8 5 7. I check it again and it is 8 5 7. It seems that the transmission is not the original one.

The original tractor did not have a starter solenoid as yours appears to have above the starter. The OEM had a starter swith actuated by the transmission lever. If you go to wwww.fergusonenthusiasts.com, the FENA website, there are some pictures that show what your tractor should look like.

Mine has a HUPP transmission added. Would that account for the starter difference?

Slacken off the coil mounting bracket and slide the coil higher in the bracket then it will fit on the block where it belongs.

As Jerry said, the solenoid has been added. The correct starting method is by the "S" position on the gear shifter.

I believe it does. One of the guys familiar with Hupp reduction gears may comment?

I'm not familiar with the 6 volt Lucas starter but that starter on your TEA20 looks very odd......???

Is that "neck" between the starter and block, original or a modification? Maybe that is why the coil won't fit?

The coil bracket is "tacked" on to the coil and I do
not know about the neck of the starter. In the left
hole of where the coil bracket should attach is a
brass screw that does not want to turn. Maybe I
should leave well enough alone as the tractor runs
well

That starter may come back on the ring gear from the right and not push in . Is there a bulge on the clutch housing to accomodate the cog..?

I think the Lucas M35G starter is a 12 volt starter, as one would expect in a "1952 TEA 20 (# is TEA 283660)". Certainly his starter looks like a Lucas 12 volt starter.

Now I'm intrigued what that "neck mounting" modification is on the starter and what purpose it serves???

I'm going to hazard a wild guess here - I suspect at some stage in the past it chewed up the starter pinion, they are (or were) no longer available and that "neck" hides some type of innovative modification? The resulting lengthened starter motor necessitated moving the coil?

I don't think so - I'm sure with that serial number it always was 12 volt. Be interesting to know if it has the original 12 volt Lucas generator still fitted?

The starter does say Lucas and I should have said
that when I mentioned the numbers. Thanks for the
picture. From it it looks like the solenoid goes
under the battery. I will go see if mine can go
there. I appreciate all your responses.
