Starter switch and electronic ignition 8N Ford

I need to replace the starter switch on my 1949 8N Ford. How complicated is this to do and what do I need to be aware of to get it done?

I am considering changing to electonic ignition. Is this a big deal? How often do I need to replace parts?

Thoughts and advice please!!!

If you mean the actual neutral-safety starter button on the tranny cover, the cover has to come off, 'cause the switch is retained by a nut under the cover. You'll need to get a gasket, and be aware there is a spring beneath the cover that pushes down on a detent ball.

As to the electronic ignition, do a search over at the "N" Board, and you'll turn up all kinds of opinions, pro and con.

Some say the 6-Volt system is NOT a good candidate for EI, because there's not much voltage to work with in the first place, and when the battery voltage further pulls down during cranking, there MAY not be enough voltage left for the electronic parts to "do their thing".

This would NOT be an "issue" if your's has been converted to 12-Volts, and probably not IF you have a GOOD battery, HEAVY cables, and all connections are 'bright and tight".

Replacement starter switch is a common thing on these. Most(including me) have gone to a heavy duty toggle switch instead of the keyed unit. Replacement is no big deal and you should be up and running in 10~15 minutes.

So far as going electronic there"s a wide opinion base. If you are still 6V with the "49 front mount most will suggest that you stick with points.

WHY would you recommend disabling the neutral safety switch?

Ford was BEFORE THEIR TIME in having a neutral safety switch, WHY disable it?

There's nothing wrong with the keyed ignition switch, either. Only an IDIOT would remove it, in favor of a toggle switch. There's PLENTY of good replacement keyed switches on the market!

Even if you THINK the tractor is in a secure place, SOMEDAY, a kid, or BLEM adult will hurt themselves and/or the tractor when it unexpectedly starts.

Then, the lawyers get THEIR "fieldday"!
