Hello all I got a new starter for my To-30 I tried to install it and it will not go in the hole I don't know if it's the fly wheel or what holding it from going in I'll post pictures of it. I have included pictures of the starter. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank's
John

it is sometimes necessary to remove the distributor to position the starter so that it will slide into the hole. Can you further explain what/where the interference exhibits?

You have a 12vollt starter for a MF35, least I think you do, How ever it still should fit.
How far from home does it go. I have heard when replacing a Lucas starter with Delco type some have said they needed a shim between starter and bellhousing.

Did you compare it to the old one?

I don't have the old one. I got the starter that someone the forums had suggested in my post before about the starter. Does the flywheel have a spot on them where the starter goes? Or should it be the same all the way around? I have tried 3 different starters and none will go in and engage into the flywheel

If the ring gear/flywheel is not round you will have problems. The starter gear has to mesh with the ring gear on the which turns 360 degrees when the engine is being cranked or is running.

I assume it's round never had any problems with getting starter in and out before. I don't think it would have all sudden went out it's been setting awhile now. I can turn the flywheel with a screw driver on the teeth.

I very much doubt your ring gear when out of round and is preventing starter installation.

Is the starter body long enough that it is hitting on the boss where the distributor mounts? Possibly needing to remove the distributor has been mentioned here. Some pictures of what you are encountering may help.

I will get you pictures tomorrow I actually got a short starter.

If you can, I would double check the part number on your starter to be sure it is for a TO-30. As far as advice on the forum it's a good idea to double check it yourself before spending your money.

Funny thing is my dad did just that today. He turned the heat on the starter and went right in.
So hopefully I'll have her fired up this week!! Question on the coil does the wire off positive go to distributor and the neg off the regulator box go to the negative on the coil?
Thanks everyone for the advice

Which ground is the battery, it makes a difference. The coil terminal matching the battery ground goes to the distributor, i.e. with a negative ground battery the negative (-) terminal of the coil gets the wire to the distributor, with a positive ground battery the positive (+) terminal of the coil gets the wire to the distributor. The other coil terminal gets the power wire from the ignition switch.

The negative cable for the battery is grounded to the body of the tractor and the there is a cable going from positive to solenoid switch and a cable coming off the switch to the starter. So is that Negative Ground? Also I can't get the tractor to turn over with the shifter and if I use a screw driver on the solenoid it turns over does that mean the solenoid is bad?

Yes, you have a negative ground system.

Post a picture of your solenoid, so we can see what you are looking at.

Not necessarily. It could be the shifter switch not supplying voltage to the solenoid coil. Check that.

I believe these used the same starter switch as the earlier Fergies did?

If so, the shifter simply closes the contacts in the switch on top of the bellhousing, there is no solenoid to energize.

Those contacts get worn and dirty over the years. I have removed and cleaned several switches with good results.
