Just, this morning bought a 1952 "M"..needs some work..

We tried Starting it but Starter not engaging..

Pulled starter and stripped, cleaned, bench tested fine..

Installed & still will not engage..

Scuffing Flywheel teeth..

XChecked the Bendix has 10 Teeth, in checking parts it shows some have 10 & others have 12 teeth..

Starter has been replaced & is a 1107448, with 10 teeth..

I suspect I need a 12 Tooth...

Any info would be appreciated...

Just starting on my 1st Big M Project..gonna need alot of info/help..

Thanks guys..

You need a fully charged battery, clean cables, and clean connections on battery, starter, ground, and starter button (which may be defective) -- then check the starter.

your saying the starter is not engaging, i am taking this as it is just spinning and not meshing with the flywheel.you say you cleaned it and bench tested it and its fine. so yes this is true but that does nothing to say the bendix is good.so if it still just spins after installation the bendix is your culprit.get a new one with the same # of teeth as was on it,should be safe unless someone had the wrong one installed previosly.

Looks like the Bendix is trying to engage with the sqaure shoulder and not the chamfer or bevel edge.?????

Appears as tho the bendix is for a CCW Direction and actually being rotated in a CW Direction..

Whoever replaced the Starter Drive may have gotten the wrong part number/item..

Plan on ordering another CW Drive and will let you know how it turns out..

We towed and got it fired late today, running on #1 & #4 only, will check the other two plug wires, connections to cap etc, but it seems like we have a good motor anyway.Got Oil Pressure..

Thank you for your input and response.
