Starting Motor turning Oliver 88 engine backwards

I recently purchased a rebuilt starting motor for my gas powered Oliver 88. I tried to start the thing this weekend and the engine turns over backwards. I was wondering how can I reverse my starting motor to turn the engine over in the correct direction.

Please pardon a rather obvious question, but did you check to make sure your battery is hooked up with the properly polarity? Also, once I had a friend of mine whose battery was run down completely flat in an old car that had a generator on it. He jumped the vehicle and the regulator had lost polarity so it charged the battery up with the polarity reversed on the battery. It had us doing a little head scratching until we figured out what had happened.

Changeing the polarity on a starter WILL NOT change the starter direction. The person doing the rebuilding put the wrong parts in,you will have to send it back.

I would venture to quess that they sent you an Super M, 400, 300 etc. Farmall starter. Good to know incase anyone ever wants to make their engine run backwards! LOL!!

I saw that happen on a Wheelhorse garden tractor.
My neighbor sold Case farm tractors and Wheelhorse
garden tractors. He wanted me to take a look at a Wheelhorse that had the starter repaired and they couldn't get it to start. I went up with him and he sat on the tractor and cranked it over.
I told to just bump the engine over and then I noticed the engine was being cranked in the wrong direction. We pulled a starter from another tractor and it fired right up. I guess they sent the starter back to the jobber. Hal
PS; That was back in the 1960's.
