Startup grease?

Just wondering what you guys prefer to use on your crank and camshaft bearings when you assemble an engine. I've always used either white lithium grease or a good quality gun grease. I am assembling my 1946 R motor and was just wanting to get some other opinions on what the best grease for the job might be. Maybe it's not that critical, as long as you have something until the oil gets flowing again. Anyway, let me know what you think.

I use a 50/50 mix of STP & synthetic oil.

I'm like Clint Youse. I use a lot[dripping off cylinders and pistons too] of the oil that I'm going to use in the motor after it's togather.

I was told to use engine oil at assembly unless the engine wasn't going to be put into service for a while. Grease doesn't lubricate like oil and if you have a freshly ground crank you may have only .0015 thousandths clearance in there.

Also have tried to pre-lube some engines before trying to start them, either by cranking over or by pressure canister.

Most times with MMs, by the time I have all the fuel and ignition/timing issues worked out I have the oil circulating anyway. . .

I will probably use either the white lithium grease or 15W-40 oil. I plan on using 15W-40 in the engine. In the past I have almost always used the lithium grease, but I guess I was just wondering if there was some "superior" product that people were using these days. We went throught alot of R and Z motors back in the 80's and 90's, but have not had much time for such projects in the last few years. It's so much fun to get greasy again! Thanks for all the replies.
