steel flywheel

I was wondering what vendors carry the steel flywheels for the Oliver 88's? Also, I am turning around 3000 rpms, in your honest opinion do I need the steel flywheel or is the cast fine? I was told that 3000 was the limit and that it would be good insurance. Also, if the cast flywheel were to fly apart and I were to get injured it would probably take me out of my job. Just wondering what yall's opinons are. I dont really want to spend the money, but if it is a good investment, then I guess I will have to find the funds. Thanks for any and all input.

pump stuck, was suppose to be a 3000 rpm tractor. Yes a steel flywheel is worth every penny.

Where are you going to get a steel flywheel for an Oliver at? I would be interested in one myself. Thanks!

All three of our oliver pulling tractors have a steel flywheel along with a scatter blankets, you mentioned injury to yourself how about to a spectater ? Call Hitt Motorsorts and talk to Brian 715 210 6859 hes out of Minnesota, hes the most reasonable on flywheels.

(quoted from post at 03:42:47 05/01/12) You answered your own question with the job comment.

My ability to work, cutting my tractor in half, ect would be the least of my worries. I'd say injuring, killing, or worse of spectators (potentially women and children) should be the primary reason for concern.

Umm,and if a spectator got hurt the lawsuit would keep you out of your house! I'd worry about them more than yourself, yes at 3000 you ought to have a steel flywheel.

I didn't see anyone ask if it was a gas or diesel...?

I ran an Oliver 88 with an 1800 gas engine for several years at a 3000 RPM goverened limit. It had a magnafluxed crack-free cast flywheel and I used a steel scatter shield over the top of the bellhousing. No problems, and never feared for the flywheel.

For those who went to watch the video of the 1206, did you note how fast the engine was actually turning before the flywheel broke? Did you notice how much he slipped the clutch at the start of the pull? Did you notice he had no air kill? Did you also notice that he had no tie bars?

Would I pull a diesel at 3000 RPM without a steel flywheel? No, not at all and I would not pull one without all the other safety equipment as well. Would I pull a mechanically governed gas engine without a steel flywheel? Yes, I have and I would. As I said, I had other "safety equipment" installed, including the factory governor and a kill switch...

I am sorry if I ever lead anyone to think that I was not concerned about the safety of the general public or any other bystanders. That could not be further from the truth. Maybe I didn't word things exactly right, and for that I appologize to all that were offended. I have a family of my own, and I have devoted all of my adult life, and many years before, to public safety and helping out my neighbors. I was simply asking for opinions on whether or not a steel flywheel was necessary for my application. I would like to thank all of you for your replies, and thanks to your comments and recommendations I have decided to go ahead with the purchase of the steel flywheel once I decide on a vendor. I just wanted to get more "educated" opinions before I dropped several hundred dollars. Once again, thanks for all the replies, and I appologize for any misunderstanding that may have come from my original message.

Oliver 88 Puller, i want to thank you for your post about needing a steel flywheel. the replies got me thinking and i ordered one from Hitt yesterday. i've been turning my 77 at 3800 for years without a problem and i think i was just lucky. i won't pull it again until the steel fly wheel is in place. you didn't offend me you just made me realize what i should do. thanks, chuck
