i have a 45 2n and was wondering if the steering box was lubed by the grease in the trans. or does it has it own sump. i need to fill it up but it leaks out. if it has its own sump could i fill it up with wheel bearing grease to keep it going?

5600......surprizinly enuff, BOTH the 9N and 2N steering gearbox are SPLASH lube'd by an "oil-slinger" on the tranny input gear. Therefore, the 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil (dipstick by yer right heel) is supposed to provide all the lubrication needed. Iff'n yer steering arms are leaking, guess what??? You need to replace the seals. Look in yer I&T FO-4 ......the oily Dell

[Dell help me here isn’t that only half the story, the top bearing in the steering tower can’t get lube from the bottom? or can it? And if you don’t have the cap with the grease fitting you will eventually have a problem.

That top bearing is what locked up mine and is why it is laying in peases all around the shop now . I’m slow but I have worked the better part of two days trying to a line the steering after replacing both bearings. When I quit tonight I think I have it.

Comes in a can.....cheap $1.00 at Walgreens

Larry......the 2N/9N steering column top bearing is NOT a load sharing bearing, like the bottom bearing is that is splash lubed from the tranny. Generally, non-load bearings are packed at the factory with greese and henceforth ignored. dunno about enny steering wheel cap with a greese zerk. Probably gitt in the way when you "honked" the horn. (snicker)

I was just explaining to 5600 why there was NO NEED to greese the 2N/9N steering gearbox 'cuz it was "splash lube'd. .......oily Dell
