Steering Box Oil Level

I filled up my steering box by pouring oil down the steering wheel shaft, this seemed to work. I then read that this is not the proper way. I have a 8N built in 1948, one of the first ones. Am I missing something?

I don't know what you are missing, maybe an operator's manual or service manual. Looks like it would have a fill and check plug somewhere on it so you could check the level.

if it holds oil , box is full and don't leak out, tyou are good to go.. otherwise pump full of 0 or 00 ep grease.

Wayne........NOT ALL steering wheel shafts drain into the steering gearbox. You may have a shaft fulla oil and empty gearbox. Early 8N gearboxes have an eazy square pipehead plug to check and fill. ........Dell

Do any of you use grease in your steering boxes? I drilled and tapped mine for a zerk and filled the box with cornhead gear box grease (a fairly light grease) and it has worked great for many many years.

Got the suggestion here - from Zane I believe.

I did a search and see many have suggested this. Cool video anyhow...

many here use the NLGI #0 EP cornhead grease or similar.

Ford, in 1962, put out a service bulletin to change over to the #0 grease in steering boxes to combat leaky sector seals.

My '48 has a plug in the side. I fill it till it over flows. Just like I would my old standard transmission under my truck
